13 Big Leaf Houseplants that Grow in Just Water

Written by Emily Belkoff

Last month, I knocked over my son’s soccer trophy and broke my favorite potted plant.

Frustrated, I wondered if there was an easier way to keep plants.

That’s when I discovered big-leaf plants that grow in just water! Here are my 13 favorites!

1. Monstera

Monsteras have stolen my heart with their large, perforated leaves. This tropical beauty looks absolutely stunning in a vase of water. I’ve placed one on our dining table, and it never fails to spark conversation during family dinners.

2. Pothos

Pothos has become my go-to for adding life to dull corners. Its trailing vines and variegated foliage are perfect for windowsills or hanging planters. I’ve got one cascading down our bookshelf, and it’s like a waterfall of green!

3. Philodendron

The Philodendron family offers so many options with big, bold leaves. My personal favorite is the Philodendron Xanadu. It’s become the centerpiece of our living room, thriving happily in a clear glass vase.

4. Dracaena

There are several Dracaena varieties that love growing in water. I’ve experimented with a few, and they’ve all adapted wonderfully to their aquatic homes.

5. Aglaonema (Chinese Evergreen)

For busy moms like me, Aglaonema is a lifesaver. It’s so easy to maintain in water and makes for a gorgeous tabletop specimen. I’ve got one on my nightstand, adding a touch of zen to our bedroom.

6. Cordyline

The colorful leaves of Cordyline bring joy to any space. Just make sure it gets plenty of dappled light throughout the day. I’ve placed one near our east-facing window, and its vibrant foliage brightens up even the gloomiest mornings.

7. Chinese Evergreen

Another winner in the easy-care category, Chinese Evergreen boasts large, variegated leaves. The roots trailing in the water add an extra layer of beauty to the display.

8. Arrowhead Plant (Syngonium)

With its distinctive arrowhead-shaped leaves growing up to 6-10 inches long, this plant is a showstopper. My kids love watching its roots grow in our kitchen window vase.

9. Elephant Ear

True to its name, Elephant Ear plants have enormous, ear-shaped leaves. I’ve got one in a large, clear vase in our entryway – it’s like having a piece of the tropics greet us every time we come home.

10. Caladium

Caladiums bring a splash of color with their heart-shaped leaves in white, pink, and green. They look stunning in vases of all types. I’ve created a little “Caladium corner” in our sunroom, and it’s become my favorite spot for morning coffee.

11. Rubber Plant

The glossy leaves of the Rubber Plant, growing up to 6-10 inches long, add a touch of elegance to any room. Mine thrives in a tall glass cylinder in our home office, adding some much-needed life to my workspace.

12. Fiddle Leaf Fig

Known for its large, violin-shaped leaves, the Fiddle Leaf Fig brings a touch of sophistication to any space. It’s thriving in water in our guest room, giving visitors a warm, natural welcome.

13. Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane)

Last but not least, Dieffenbachia, with its large, variegated leaves, is not only beautiful but also helps purify the air. I’ve placed one in each of my kids’ rooms – a silent, leafy guardian of good air quality.
