14 Fast Growing Vines for Covering a Fence or Wall

Written by Emily Belkoff

Did you know that vines can do much more than just climb trees? They’re perfect for transforming plain fences and walls into stunning vertical gardens!

This extensive list covers 14 fast-growing vines that can quickly beautify your outdoor spaces.

1. Trumpet Creeper

When I first planted trumpet creeper, I was amazed at how quickly it took off. This vigorous vine can reach an impressive height of 20 to 30 feet, making it perfect for covering large areas.

The vibrant flowers add a pop of color that never fails to make me smile. It’s been a fantastic solution for those pesky gaps in our fence.

2. Morning Glory

There’s something magical about waking up to the sight of morning glories in bloom. These fast growers come in a rainbow of colors – blue, red, white, purple, rose, and even two-tone combinations.

They’ve added such a charming touch to our garden fence that I can’t help but feel a little giddy every time I see them.

3. English Ivy

For year-round greenery, English ivy has been my go-to. This evergreen vine effortlessly covers gaps in our fence, creating a lush, elegant backdrop for the rest of our garden.

It’s like having a living tapestry right in our backyard!

4. Virginia Creeper

Oh, the autumn display of Virginia creeper! While it does require some pruning to keep it in check, the bright red foliage in fall is absolutely worth the effort.

I’ve trained it along our fence, and it provides both privacy and a stunning seasonal show.

5. Hops

Who knew that the same plant used for brewing beer could be such a garden superstar? Hops grow vigorously, producing lush green foliage that creates a dense, attractive screen.

The late summer blooms are an added bonus that always catch my eye.

6. Black-Eyed Susan Vine

These cheerful little flowers never fail to bring a smile to my face. With their dainty trumpet shapes in yellows, oranges, and reds, they’re like little bursts of sunshine in the garden.

The distinctive black center gives them such character – they’re truly a conversation starter!

7. Passion Flower Vine

Talk about a showstopper! When I first saw passion flowers blooming on our fence, I could hardly believe my eyes. Their unique, almost alien-like appearance is truly captivating.

They come in a range of colors, adding an exotic touch to our suburban garden.

8. Hyacinth Bean Vine

I fell in love with the Hyacinth Bean Vine for its multi-faceted beauty. The foliage alone, with its shades of green, purple, and bronze, is stunning.

But when those clusters of purple or white flowers appear, it takes our fence from simple boundary to elegant garden feature.

9. Dutchman’s Pipe

With its large heart-shaped leaves and quirky pipe-shaped flowers, Dutchman’s Pipe quickly became a family favorite. It grows fast, reaching 20 to 30 feet, and covers our fence with abundant foliage.

The kids love trying to spot the unusual flowers hidden among the leaves.

10. Mountain Clematis

Mountain Clematis has been a versatile addition to our garden. It thrives in both sunny spots and partial shade, which is perfect for our varied landscape.

The showy pink or white flowers are a delightful contrast against the green fence.

11. Climbing Hydrangea

I’ll admit, I was a bit impatient when I first planted climbing hydrangea. It seemed to take forever to get going! But once established, it took off like a rocket.

Now, years later, its lush foliage and delicate flowers have transformed our plain wall into a charming garden feature.

12. Honeysuckle

The scent of honeysuckle on a warm summer evening is pure bliss. This fast-growing vine can reach up to 20 feet, covering our fence with fragrant tubular flowers in shades of pink, white, and yellow.

It’s become a favorite spot for the local hummingbirds too!

13. Wisteria

Wisteria has always held a special place in my heart. When those fragrant pale lilac flowers hang in 12-inch clusters during early and mid-summer, it’s like something out of a fairy tale.

It grows quickly and creates a truly breathtaking display on our fence.

14. Persian Ivy

For those tricky shaded areas, Persian Ivy has been a lifesaver. Its variegated foliage adds interest and can grow to an impressive 40 to 50 feet.

It’s added color, texture, and a touch of grandeur to what was once a dull, shaded fence line.
