Top 10 Fragrant Indoor Plants to Make Your Home Smell Heavenly

Written by Emily Belkoff

Want to know a mom hack for keeping your house smelling fresh without those expensive air fresheners?

Indoor plants! Not just any plants though – I’m talking about the ones that actually smell good.

Here are my top 10 picks that make my house smell wonderful all year.

1. Jasmine

My love affair with jasmine began when I placed a small plant in our bedroom last spring.

The sweet, intoxicating fragrance of its delicate white flowers literally stopped my husband in his tracks the first time he experienced it.

This night-blooming beauty has become our natural sleep aid, as its calming scent helps us unwind after hectic days.

Just a few blooms near our sunny window fill the entire room with their dreamy aroma.

2. Lavender

There’s something magical about bringing a touch of Provence into your home with lavender.

I keep a pot in my home office, and its blend of floral, herbal, and woody scents helps me stay focused during endless Zoom meetings.

Just remember to keep it away from curious pets – it’s toxic to cats and dogs (learned that lesson the hard way!).

3. Mint

My kitchen windowsill mint plant has become my secret weapon for both fragrance and flavor.

Nothing beats brushing past it while cooking, releasing that fresh, invigorating scent that instantly lifts my mood.

It’s perfect for impromptu mojitos during mom’s night in, and my kids love helping me pick fresh leaves for our afternoon tea.

4. Begonia

I originally chose begonias for their pretty blooms, not realizing they’d offer such a lovely subtle fragrance.

Some varieties in my collection give off a light citrusy scent, while others surprise me with sweet or spicy notes.

Their pastel to vibrant blooms are just a bonus to their delightful aroma.

5. Citrus Plants

My little potted Meyer lemon tree has become the star of our sunroom.

Not only does it provide year-round fresh citrus scent, but watching the fruits develop has become a family activity.

The glossy leaves and eventual fruits create such a cheerful atmosphere, and the tangy aroma becomes more pronounced as the fruits ripen.

6. Orchids

Don’t let their elegant appearance intimidate you – orchids can be surprisingly cooperative houseplants.

I was shocked to discover that many varieties offer gorgeous fragrances ranging from sweet to spicy to citrusy.

They’ve become my go-to decoration for dinner parties, adding both sophisticated beauty and subtle perfume to our gatherings.

7. Lily of the Valley

These dainty bell-shaped flowers pack a powerful punch in the fragrance department.

Their sweet spring-morning scent reminds me of my grandmother’s garden.

Just remember to place them well out of reach if you have little ones or pets around – they’re beautiful but toxic if ingested.

8. Eucalyptus

My eucalyptus plant turned our guest bathroom into a spa-like retreat.

Its refreshing, slightly sweet camphor scent naturally purifies the air and creates an invigorating atmosphere.

The silvery-green leaves add a designer touch that’s earned me quite a few compliments from visitors.

9. Gardenia

The day I brought home my first gardenia, my teenage daughter declared it “literally the best smell ever.”

Its creamy white flowers and glossy leaves are stunning, but the romantic fragrance is what truly steals the show.

I keep one in our reading nook, where its sleep-promoting properties make it the perfect companion for bedtime stories.

10. Heliotrope

Last but certainly not least, my beloved “Cherry Pie Plant” brings smiles to everyone who visits.

Its clusters of purple flowers emit the most incredible vanilla-almond scent with hints of cherry pie.

It’s become a conversation starter at playdates, with other moms always asking about the mysterious dessert-like fragrance in our living room.
