7 Best Shrubs and Trees for a Beautiful Autumn Display

Written by Emily Belkoff

As a busy mom who loves gardening, I’ve always dreamed of having gorgeous fall colors in my yard that last beyond the short-lived spring and summer blooms.

After years of trial and error, I’ve discovered these incredible trees and shrubs that keep my garden looking magical well into autumn, and I’m excited to share them with you!

1. Dogwood: The Perfect “Goldilocks” Tree

Let me tell you why I absolutely adore my dogwood tree. It’s not too big and not too small – just right at 20-30 feet tall.

What really sold me was how it gives us something beautiful to look at all year long. In spring, it bursts into life with the prettiest white, pink, or red flowers with tiny yellow centers.

During summer, its leafy canopy provides the perfect shady spot for my kids to play underneath.

But fall? That’s when the magic happens! The leaves transform into the most stunning deep red color you can imagine.

Even in winter, this tree keeps on giving with its unique bark that my kids say looks just like alligator skin.

2. Burning Bush: The Low-Maintenance Show-Stopper

If you’re anything like me and want gorgeous results without tons of work, you’ll love burning bush.

In my front yard, where it gets full sun, this bush turns the most incredible shade of red in fall – it literally looks like it’s on fire!

I have another one in a partially shady spot that turns this beautiful soft pink-orange color instead.

The best part? It’s practically impossible to kill! Just give it a bit of fertilizer in early spring, trim it when it gets too wild, and you’re good to go.

3. Fothergilla: The Three-Season Wonder

This might be the most underrated shrub in my garden, but boy, does it put on a show!

It starts in spring with these adorable white, fuzzy flowers that smell amazing. My daughter says they smell like honey!

The show continues through summer with full, lush foliage and more of those pretty white blooms.

Come fall, it’s like nature’s fireworks display with purple, red, yellow, and orange all on one bush!

4. Virginia Sweet Spire: The Late-Season Star

This is my go-to plant for those tricky spots in the garden that get mixed sun and shade.

In spring and summer, it’s covered in these delicate white flower clusters that look like tiny bottlebrushes.

But what really makes this plant special is how it holds onto its gorgeous fall colors – red, orange, and gold – well into early winter when everything else has gone brown.

5. Japanese Maple: The Elegant Beauty

Oh, how I love my Japanese maple! Its delicate, lacy leaves make it look like something out of a fairy tale.

Fair warning though – when I first planted mine, it got a bit crispy around the edges during our hot summer days. But don’t worry! As it got older, this stopped being an issue.

Pro tip from my experience: The more sun it gets, the more spectacular the fall colors will be. Mine turns the most amazing shades of red and orange!

6. Smoke Bush: The Conversation Starter

This is hands-down the most unique plant in my garden, and visitors always ask about it.

In spring, it starts with light green flower clusters, but by summer, these transform into these wispy, smoky-looking plumes in purple or pink.

Just when you think it can’t get any better, fall arrives and the leaves turn these incredible deep purple, red, and orange shades.

I have mine as a focal point in my front yard, but it would work beautifully as a natural privacy screen too!

7. Sargent’s Cherry Tree: The Spring-to-Fall Stunner

If you’re looking for the perfect small tree that puts on multiple shows throughout the year, this is it!

In spring, it’s absolutely covered in rosy pink blooms – we’re talking Instagram-worthy photo opportunities here!

The leaves start out this gorgeous bronze color, then transition to deep green for summer.

Come fall, it’s back to showing off with a mix of red, orange, and bronze colors that make my yard look like it belongs in a magazine.
