7 Beautiful Shrubs That Thrive Without Water

Written by Emily Belkoff

Between juggling the kids’ activities, working from home, and trying to keep up with daily chores, I’ll be honest – sometimes my garden takes a backseat.

And don’t even get me started about remembering to water everything during those scorching summer months!

That’s exactly why I fell in love with these incredible low-maintenance shrubs that practically thrive on neglect.

Top 7 Drought-Resistant Shrubs for Your Garden

Let me share my favorite water-wise shrubs that have completely transformed my garden (and saved my sanity in the process).

1. Bougainvillea

You know those stunning Mediterranean-style photos you see on Pinterest? Those gorgeous flowering vines cascading down sun-baked walls? That’s bougainvillea!

I first fell in love with this beauty during a family vacation to Arizona. It’s incredibly versatile – you can grow it as either a climbing vine or shape it into a shrub.

For my northern garden friends, you can totally grow this stunning plant in containers. Just remember to bring it inside when the cold weather hits!

2. Butterfly Bush

I have to tell you about my absolute favorite butterfly bush variety – ‘Blue Chip’. It’s one of the newer types that won’t take over your garden like some of the older varieties might.

The best part? It lives up to its name! My kids spend hours watching butterflies flutter around these beautiful bushes.

Just check with your local garden center about which varieties work best in your area, as some types can be a bit too enthusiastic about spreading.

3. Russian Sage

Don’t let the fancy name fool you – this is one tough cookie! While technically it’s a “sub-shrub” (garden speak for somewhere between a perennial flower and a shrub), I just call it amazing.

The silvery stems and leaves create this gorgeous ethereal look in my garden, especially when the lavender-colored flowers bloom.

And here’s a bonus – deer won’t touch it! Plus, it has this lovely fragrance that reminds me of an herb garden.

4. Lantana

Oh my goodness, if you’re in a warm climate like Florida, this plant grows like nobody’s business! But don’t let that scare you off.

For those of us in cooler areas, lantana makes the perfect container plant. I have mine in window boxes and hanging baskets, and they add such cheerful color all summer long.

Just remember that if you live where winters get cold, you’ll need to treat it as an annual – think of it as your summer fling!

5. Barberry

I like to call this one my “hands-off” plant, and I mean that literally – it’s covered in thorns! But that’s actually a good thing if you have deer problems like I do.

This tough-as-nails shrub comes with beautiful red berries that brighten up the winter landscape.

While the original species can be a bit invasive, there are lots of well-behaved varieties available now at garden centers.

6. Virginia Sweetspire

This might be my favorite shrub for lazy gardeners (raising my hand here!). Once it gets established, it basically takes care of itself.

In spring, it’s covered with these beautiful white flower spires that look like little fountains. But honestly? I grow it for the amazing fall colors.

If you’re looking to replace an invasive burning bush, this native plant is your new best friend.

7. Heavenly Bamboo (Nandina)

Don’t let the name fool you – this isn’t actually bamboo at all! But its stems sure look like it, which gives it such a cool, exotic vibe.

I first discovered this plant (technically called Nandina domestica) when visiting my sister in Georgia, where it’s super popular.

It’s become one of my go-to recommendations for anyone wanting a low-maintenance shrub with year-round interest.

Wrapping Up

These drought-resistant shrubs have been absolute game-changers in my garden. They keep looking fantastic even when life gets crazy and watering slides to the bottom of my to-do list.

And isn’t that what we all need – beautiful plants that don’t make us feel guilty when we forget about them for a while?
