9 Best Vines and Climbers for Balcony and Patio

Written by Emily Belkoff

When I first moved into my apartment with a tiny balcony, I felt so limited by the space.

But then I discovered the magical world of climbing plants, and oh my goodness – they completely transformed my outdoor space into a green paradise!

Let me share my absolute favorite vines and climbers that can turn any balcony or patio into a stunning vertical garden.

9 Must-Try Climbing Plants for Your Outdoor Oasis!

1. Bougainvillea

You guys, I’m totally obsessed with bougainvillea! This stunning climber is like a rainbow for your balcony.

The colors are just incredible – we’re talking gorgeous pinks, magentas, reds, and even whites and yellows that’ll make your heart skip a beat.

I keep mine in a big pot near my reading nook, and let me tell you, it’s the perfect backdrop for my morning coffee!

2. Trumpet Vine

Remember when I thought nothing could beat my bougainvillea? Then I discovered trumpet vine!

These beauties produce the most amazing trumpet-shaped flowers in purple, blue, pink, and white that’ll have your neighbors asking for gardening tips.

I love how their little tendrils grab onto everything – it’s like they’re giving your trellis a big hug!

3. Star Jasmine

Oh my word, can we talk about the heavenly scent of star jasmine? It’s absolutely divine!

I planted mine last spring, and it grew so fast I could hardly believe my eyes.

The white blooms appear in late spring and early summer, creating the most magical evening atmosphere on my balcony.

4. Spillers

Want to know my secret weapon for instant drama? Spillers!

These fast-growing vines create the most gorgeous waterfall effect as they cascade over pot edges.

Trust me, once you see how they transform a plain container into a living curtain of green, you’ll be hooked!

5. Senecio

Looking for something super low-maintenance? Senecio is your new best friend!

The waxy triangular leaves add such interesting texture, and they’re practically impossible to kill (believe me, I’ve tested this!).

It’s perfect for busy plant parents who want something that looks fancy but doesn’t need constant attention.

6. Blue Sky Flower

Here’s a total show-stopper that’ll make your space look like a magazine cover!

The light blue flowers with their little yellow centers are just too precious, and they bring such a sweet, cottage-garden vibe to any space.

I’ve found they’re happiest in a sunny spot where they can really show off their beautiful blooms.

7. Purple Flowering Vine

Want to attract some wonderful wildlife to your outdoor space? This vine is your answer!

The purple blooms are absolute butterfly magnets – my daughter and I love watching them visit every morning.

Just make sure to give it plenty of sunshine, and it’ll reward you with the most amazing purple flower display.

8. Golden Bell Clematis

Talk about a conversation starter! This clematis is pure garden gold.

The yellow flowers hang down like little bells, and when they turn to feathery seeds, it’s like having natural fairy lights.

Mine grew so fast in full sun, I could hardly keep up with it (but in the best possible way!).

9. Sweet Pea

Last but definitely not least, sweet peas are my absolute favorite for adding a touch of cottage charm!

These darlings produce the most beautiful butterfly-shaped flowers in the prettiest colors – pinks, purples, blues, and whites.

The fragrance is absolutely incredible – I always cut a few stems to bring inside and make my whole house smell amazing!

Wrapping Up

Let me tell you, transforming your outdoor space with these climbing beauties is easier than you might think! Just give them some good soil, the right amount of sun, and a little love, and they’ll reward you with the most stunning vertical garden you can imagine.
