How to Grow & Care for Stunning Brugmansia (Angel’s Trumpets)

Written by Emily Belkoff

You won’t believe how I fell in love with growing Angel’s Trumpets in my garden!

These stunning tropical beauties might look intimidating, but I promise they’re surprisingly easy to grow.

Let me share my secrets for growing these showstopping plants that’ll make your neighbors swoon!

Basic Growing Requirements

Soil & Feeding

Let me tell you, these beauties are the ultimate garden divas when it comes to feeding time! I learned this the hard way during my first season growing them.

They absolutely need rich, nutrient-packed compost to thrive – think of them as the teenage athletes of the plant world, always hungry for more!

I discovered that even the best compost runs out of steam after 4-6 weeks, so regular feeding is a must. I give mine a liquid feed once a week during growing season, sometimes even twice if they’re looking extra hungry.

Container & Watering

Here’s a pro tip I wish someone had told me when I started: choose a container that’s large but still manageable to move around. Trust me, you’ll thank me when winter rolls around!

I always pop a dish underneath my containers – it’s like giving your plants a little water reservoir for those scorching summer days.

Speaking of water, these thirsty plants need daily drinks during summer. I check mine every morning with my coffee – it’s become quite the ritual!

Flowering & Plant Characteristics

About Brugmansia

My Brugmansia suaveolens (fancy name, right?) looks like it belongs in a tropical paradise, but don’t let that fool you!

The flowers are absolutely magical – imagine giant trumpets dangling from branches, releasing the most intoxicating fragrance in the evening.

I love sitting on my patio at sunset when these beauties really put on their perfume show – it’s like nature’s own aromatherapy session!

Flowering Indicators

Want to know my secret for getting tons of blooms? Watch for the Y-shaped stems – that’s where the magic happens!

Single straight stems won’t give you flowers, no matter how much you sweet-talk them. I learned this after months of wondering why some branches never bloomed!

Safety & Protection

Plant Safety

Now, I need to put on my serious mom hat for a moment – these gorgeous plants are actually part of the same family as deadly nightshade.

Every part of the plant is toxic, so I always keep my gardening gloves handy. If I do get hands-on, I make sure to wash up thoroughly afterward.

Winter Care

Preparing for Winter

When autumn rolls around, I give my plants what I call their “winter haircut” – trimming them back to about 1-2 feet tall.

Finding the perfect winter home for them is crucial – they need somewhere that stays above 7 degrees Celsius. Mine spend their winters in my frost-free shed, cozy as can be!

Spring Revival

Come April or May, it’s like waking up Sleeping Beauty! I start gradually increasing their water, watching eagerly for those first signs of life.

Once those fresh shoots appear, it’s party time – back to regular feeding and watching them shoot up like magic beanstalks!

Pest Management

Common Pests

Just like how my vegetable garden attracts rabbits, these plants have their own fan club of unwanted visitors – slugs, snails, and caterpillars outdoors, plus the usual indoor suspects like spider mites and aphids.

Pest Control

My go-to solution is neem oil spray – it’s organic and gets the job done without harsh chemicals.

The winter defoliation is actually a blessing in disguise – it’s like giving your plants a fresh start, pest-free for the new season!

Wrapping Up

Remember, growing Brugmansia is like having a high-maintenance friend – they need lots of attention, but they’ll reward you with the most spectacular display you’ve ever seen!

Keep at it, and before you know it, you’ll have the most jaw-dropping focal point in your garden.
