10 Plants That Mosquitoes Hate (And We Love)

Written by Emily Belkoff

I’ve spent countless hours trying to create the perfect backyard oasis for my family. But let’s face it, nothing ruins a lovely evening outdoors faster than those pesky mosquitoes!

If you’re like me and want to avoid chemical sprays, I’ve got a natural solution that’s both beautiful and effective.

Let me share my favorite mosquito-repelling plants that have transformed our outdoor living space!

Top 10 Mosquito-Repelling Plants

1. Basil

Basil isn’t just for pesto anymore! This aromatic herb has a pungent smell that mosquitoes can’t stand. I’ve planted basil all around our patio, and it’s been a game-changer. Plus, it’s always handy for cooking!

  • Loves full sun
  • Deters mosquitoes and flies
  • Delicious in many recipes

2. Mint

Oh, how I love our mint plants! They’re not just for mojitos (though that’s a big plus). Mint is a mosquito-repelling powerhouse.

  • Repels mosquitoes and kills their larvae
  • Perfect for cocktails and simple syrups
  • Thrives in full sun

Pro tip: Keep mint in separate planters. Trust me, I learned the hard way how quickly it can take over a garden!

3. Marigolds

While I’m not usually big on annuals, marigolds have earned a permanent spot in our yard.

  • Contains pyrethrum, a common insect repellent ingredient
  • Great companion plant for tomatoes
  • Repels various garden pests

4. Scented Geranium (Mosquito Plant)

I stumbled upon these beauties in the discount aisle at our local nursery, and what a find!

  • Smells similar to citronella
  • Can grow up to 2 feet tall
  • Adds a lovely scent to the backyard

5. Citronella Grass

This is the real deal, folks. Create a natural mosquito barrier around your outdoor areas with citronella grass.

  • True source of citronella scent
  • Thrives in partial shade
  • Forms an effective mosquito barrier

6. Lemon Balm

Another mint family superstar, lemon balm is a fragrant addition to any yard.

  • Repels blood-sucking insects
  • Adds a fresh, lemony scent
  • Easy to grow in full sun

7. Lavender

Lavender is my secret weapon for a relaxing, mosquito-free evening outdoors.

  • Repels mosquitoes
  • Has a calming effect on humans
  • Perfect for planting near seating areas

8. Rosemary

While it’s not my personal favorite for cooking, rosemary has earned its place in our garden.

  • Fragrant herb that repels mosquitoes
  • Versatile for cooking
  • Thrives in full sun

9. Garlic

Who knew this kitchen staple could be such a garden superhero?

  • Repels various garden pests, including mosquitoes
  • Versatile for cooking
  • Can be grown in beds, raised gardens, or planters

10. Catnip

Last but not least, catnip is a multi-purpose wonder in our yard.

  • Repels mosquitoes and other garden pests
  • Attracts cats (a bonus for feline lovers!)
  • Easy to grow in full sun

Strategic Planting for Maximum Effect

Creating a Mosquito-Repelling Barrier

I’ve found that combining citronella grass and lemongrass around the perimeter of our patio creates an effective mosquito barrier. As a bonus, lemongrass is fantastic for cooking and cocktails!

Sunlight Requirements

Full Sun Plants (6-8 hours daily)

Basil, mint, marigold, lemon balm, lavender, rosemary, garlic, and catnip all love soaking up the sun.

Partial Shade Plants

  • Scented geraniums (they appreciate afternoon shade)
  • Citronella grass

Additional Tips for a Mosquito-Free Outdoor Space

Companion Planting

Try planting marigolds with your tomatoes. It’s a match made in garden heaven!

Container Gardening

I keep our mint in planters to prevent it from taking over. This approach also allows for flexibility in arranging our mosquito-repelling plants.

Maintenance and Care

Regular pruning and harvesting encourage growth. Don’t forget to water and fertilize for optimal plant health.

Natural Repellents

I love making DIY sprays using essential oils from our mosquito-repelling plants. Citronella candles and torches are also great additions to our outdoor space.

Eliminating Standing Water

Remember to remove any standing water around your yard. Those little puddles can quickly become mosquito breeding grounds!
