How to Make Thanksgiving Cactus Bloom on Time

Written by Emily Belkoff

When it comes to holiday plants, nothing quite compares to the vibrant blooms of a Thanksgiving Cactus.

As someone who’s spent years cultivating these beauties, I’ve learned that getting them to flower on time is both an art and a science.

From light exposure tricks to watering schedules, there’s a whole world of care that goes into coaxing out those perfect blooms.

Whether you’re a seasoned plant parent or just starting your gardening journey, I’m excited to share my tried-and-true tips.

Understanding Thanksgiving Cactus Blooms

Blooming Period

In my experience, Thanksgiving Cacti are the unsung heroes of holiday decorations. These beautiful plants typically bloom from late fall through winter, making them perfect for adding a pop of color to your festive decor. I’ve found that you can usually expect flowers around Thanksgiving, with the blooming period lasting a generous 7 to 8 weeks.

But here’s a little secret I’ve discovered: with the right care, you might even be treated to a second bloom in spring! It’s like getting a bonus round of beauty.

Controlling Light for Optimal Blooming

Ideal Light Placement

Over the years, I’ve learned that light is crucial for these plants. I’ve had the best success placing my Thanksgiving Cactus near an east-facing window. This spot ensures it gets the indirect sunlight it craves without the harsh afternoon rays.

Darkness Requirements

Now, here’s something that took me a while to figure out – these plants are real darkness lovers! They need about 12 hours of darkness each night. During fall, I often find myself playing “plant hide-and-seek,” moving my cactus to a dark spot or even covering it at night.

Adjusting Watering for Bloom Induction

Fall Watering Routine

As the weather cools down, I’ve learned to adjust my watering habits. I let the soil dry out between waterings, typically watering every 2 to 3 weeks. This slight stress actually helps trigger bud formation – who knew plants liked a little challenge?

Just a word of caution from my own mishaps: don’t let it dry out completely. Finding that balance can be tricky, but it’s so rewarding when you get it right.

Pruning for Fuller Blooms

Post-Summer Pruning Technique

Here’s a little trick I picked up: after the summer bloom, I gently pinch back the growing tips. It feels a bit counterintuitive at first, but trust me, it encourages bushier growth. The result? More flowers in the next blooming season. It’s like giving your plant a tiny haircut for a fuller, more fabulous look.

Managing Temperature for Blooming

Ideal Temperature Range

Temperature management is another key to success. From spring to fall, I keep my Thanksgiving Cactus in a cozy spot, around 70 to 80°F. It’s like they have their own little climate-controlled paradise.

Once those buds start forming, though, I’m extra careful. I make sure the temperature doesn’t creep above 90°F. I learned this the hard way when I once lost a bunch of buds to a warm spell. Now, I’m vigilant about maintaining the right temperature to prevent bud drop.

Fertilizing for Healthy Blooms

Fertilization Schedule

Feeding your Thanksgiving Cactus is like serving it a gourmet meal. During the growing season in spring and summer, I use a diluted balanced fertilizer. But come mid-September, I stop the fertilizer to encourage blooming.

After the flowers have faded in early spring, I resume fertilizing. It’s like giving the plant a little post-performance nutrition boost to get ready for its next show.

By following these steps, I’ve managed to have my Thanksgiving Cactus bloom right on time, year after year. It’s become a cherished part of my holiday traditions. Give these tips a try, and you’ll have a Thanksgiving Cactus in full bloom
