14 Flowers that Don’t Need a Lot of Water

Written by Emily Belkoff

When it comes to creating a beautiful garden, there are two paths you can take: choose thirsty plants that demand constant watering, or opt for drought-tolerant beauties that thrive with minimal care.

If you’re looking to save time, water, and energy, low-maintenance flowers are the way to go!

1. Desert Rose

My love affair with low-maintenance flowers began with the Desert Rose. This stunning plant thrives in arid conditions, making it perfect for busy gardeners like me. Its resilience never fails to amaze me, and its beauty is a constant reminder of nature’s ability to adapt.

2. Blanket Flower

Next on my list is the Blanket Flower. Its vibrant hues always remind me of the cozy blankets my kids love. This hardy perennial has become a staple in my dry climate garden, adding splashes of color without demanding much of my time for watering.

3. Bougainvillea

Bougainvillea holds a special place in my heart. Its small white flowers surrounded by showy, paper-like bracts in various shades bring a tropical feel to my garden. The best part? It barely needs any water!

4. Lantana

I adore Lantana for its clusters of vibrant flowers and aromatic foliage. It adds a whimsical touch to my garden and has become my go-to choice for drought-resistant planting.

5. Moss Rose

Moss Rose, with its colorful daisy-like blooms, graces my garden beds beautifully. It’s perfect for those areas where I tend to forget about watering.

6. Crown of Thorns

The Crown of Thorns is a resilient succulent that adds an exotic touch to my garden. Its thorny branches and minimal watering needs make it an interesting conversation piece when friends visit.

7. Lavender Cotton

Lavender Cotton brings a touch of elegance to my garden with its silver-gray foliage and small yellow flowers. It thrives in the low-water conditions of my yard, making it a favorite.

8. Verbena

Verbena has won me over with its abundant clusters of vibrant blooms. It adds bursts of color to my garden with minimal effort on my part.

9. Oleander

I love the beautiful clusters of fragrant flowers on my Oleander shrubs. They’re hardy enough for our arid climate and require little water, which fits perfectly into my low-maintenance garden plan.

10. Rose Campion

Rose Campion adds a touch of old-world charm to my garden. Its velvety silver leaves and vibrant magenta flowers are well-suited for the dry conditions in my yard.

11. Rock Soapwort

Rock Soapwort has become my go-to for those tricky rocky areas in my landscape. Its cascades of pink or white flowers are both resilient and charming.

12. Pine Leaf Penstemon

The Pine Leaf Penstemon, with its vibrant red or orange tubular flowers, has quickly become one of my top choices for my low-water garden areas.

13. Firecracker Plant

I love the bold, tropical touch that the Firecracker Plant adds to my garden. Its fiery red or orange tubular flowers are a showstopper, and it thrives in our dry conditions.

14. Snowdrops

Lastly, Snowdrops hold a special place in my heart. These small, delicate early bloomers often surprise me by emerging before the last snow melts. They’re well-adapted to our cold climate and can tolerate the dry conditions that follow.
