12 Best Tall Low Light Houseplants

Written by Emily Belkoff

Struggling with dark corners in your home? I’ve been there!

After years of trial and error, I’ve discovered 12 amazing tall houseplants that thrive in low light.

These green beauties have completely transformed my space – and they can do the same for you!

1. Kentia Palm

Height: 6 to 10 feet

Low light tolerance: Excellent

Description: Majestic and ideal for low light areas

The Kentia Palm is a true showstopper. I have one in my living room corner, and it never fails to impress guests with its elegant, arching fronds. It’s like having a piece of tropical paradise right in my home.

2. Snake Plant

Height: 6 to 8 feet

Care level: Very low maintenance

Key feature: Tolerant of irregular watering

Snake Plants are my go-to for busy weeks when I might forget to water. They’re as low-maintenance as a pet rock, which is perfect for my hectic mom life. Plus, their striking vertical leaves add a modern touch to any room.

3. Parlor Palm

Height: Up to 6 feet

Key feature: Brings a touch of the tropics

Light requirement: Doesn’t need daily sunbathing

When I’m craving a tropical vibe but stuck in my dim apartment, the Parlor Palm is my best friend. It happily reaches for the ceiling without demanding constant attention or bright light.

4. Dragon Tree

Height: 7 to 10 feet

Distinctive feature: Gracefully draping leaves

Appearance: Compared to a celebrity’s designer gown

My Dragon Tree is the drama queen of my plant collection, but in the best way possible. Its leaves cascade down like a glamorous gown, adding a touch of elegance to my home office.

5. Cast Iron Plant

Height: 5 to 6 feet

Key feature: Extremely tough

True to its name, the Cast Iron Plant is as tough as nails. It’s been a lifesaver during those busy periods when plant care takes a backseat to family responsibilities.

6. Monstera

The Bamboo Palm is my go-to for creating a calm, spa-like atmosphere. It’s like having a personal Zen master in plant form, quietly thriving in low light conditions.

8. Schefflera (Umbrella Tree)

Height: Up to 10 feet

Key feature: Umbrella-like canopy of glossy leaves

My Schefflera, or Umbrella Tree, is a real crowd-pleaser. Its unique leaf structure creates a natural canopy that adds interest and depth to my dining area.

9. Rubber Plant

Key feature: Glossy leaves

The Rubber Plant is like the bodybuilder of my plant collection. Its large, glossy leaves make a bold statement, even in the dimmest corners of my home.

10. Bird of Paradise

Height: 7 to 8 feet

Key feature: Beautiful and exotic appearance

Light tolerance: Flourishes in low light

My Bird of Paradise brings a touch of the exotic to my indoor garden. Its large, paddle-shaped leaves create a striking silhouette, even without its famous flowers.

11. Fiddle Leaf Fig

Height: 10 to 12 feet indoors

The Fiddle Leaf Fig has been my most ambitious plant project. With patience and care, it’s grown into a towering beauty that remains lush and green despite the low light.

Last but not least, my Dieffenbachia adds a splash of variegated color to my plant collection. Its ability to thrive in shade makes it a perfect choice for brightening up darker spaces.
