How to Keep Houseplants Alive in Winters

Written by Emily Belkoff

Is winter tough on your plants? Mine too! But I’ve found some simple ways to help them survive the cold months.

If you want to stop your plants from dying this winter, keep reading. I’ll tell you exactly what to do!

Understanding Winter Challenges for Houseplants

Environmental Factors Affecting Plant Growth

Oh, how our plants suffer in winter! Short days, chilly temps, dry air, and limited sunshine can really take a toll. I remember my first winter as a plant mom – it was a disaster! But now I know better, and I’m here to help you avoid my mistakes.

Essential Steps to Keep Houseplants Alive in Winter

1. Optimizing Sunlight Exposure

Just like how we crave more sunshine in winter, our plants do too! I’ve learned to become a bit of a sun chaser for my leafy babies.

East-facing Windows

These are perfect for gentle souls that love bright but soft morning light. My peace lily thrives here!

South or West-facing Windows

For sun-worshippers, these spots are golden. My succulents soak up the rays here all day long.

I make it a habit to rotate my plants every few days. It’s like giving them a little dance, ensuring every leaf gets its turn in the spotlight.

2. Adjusting Watering Schedule

Overwatering in winter? Been there, done that! Now I know better. Our green friends slow down their growth in winter, some even take a full-on nap (aka dormancy).

I’ve learned to be stingy with water during these months. It’s all about finding that sweet spot – keeping them hydrated without drowning them. Trust me, root rot is not a battle you want to fight!

3. Increasing Humidity Levels

Winter air can be as dry as my humor after a sleepless night with the kids. But while I can slather on moisturizer, our plants need a bit more help.

Using a Humidifier

This has been a game-changer in our home. Not only does it help my plants, but it’s also great for preventing those pesky winter colds!

Pebble Tray Method

For plants that love extra moisture, I use this trick. It’s like creating a mini-spa for them!

Misting

I’ll be honest, I’m not the most consistent with misting. But when I remember, my plants seem to appreciate the effort.

4. Pest Management in Winter

Just like how my kids bring home every bug from school, our homes become a cozy retreat for pests in winter. I’ve made it a weekly ritual to inspect my plants – leaves, soil, the works. It’s like a mini treasure hunt, except I’m looking for unwanted guests!

5. Fertilizer Usage

I used to be that overzealous plant parent who fertilized year-round. Big mistake! Now I know better – winter is rest time for our green friends. I’ve learned to resist the urge to feed them until early spring.

6. Maintaining Plant Hygiene

Dusty leaves are like dirty windows – they block out the light. I’ve turned leaf-cleaning into a relaxing routine. It’s my quiet time after the kids are in bed, just me and my plants.

7. Temperature Control

Plants are like Goldilocks – they need the temperature to be just right. I aim for a cozy 65-75°F during the day and a slightly cooler 55-65°F at night. Anything below 50°F and they start to shiver!

8. Protecting Plants from Cold Drafts

I learned this the hard way when I left my favorite fern by a drafty window one winter night. Now, I make sure to tuck my plants away from chilly spots before bedtime.

9. Insulating Plants

Who knew bubble wrap could be a plant’s best friend? This cheap trick has saved many of my potted pals from winter’s chill. It’s like giving them a cozy blanket to snuggle in!
