10 Indoor Vines That Thrive in Water (Best Climbing Plants)

Written by Emily Belkoff

Want to add some green to your home without the hassle? I’ve got just the thing – vines that grow in water!

No soil, no problem. I’ve been growing these for years, and they’re perfect for busy people or anyone who thinks they can’t keep plants alive.

Here are my 10 go-to water plants that even I can’t kill!

1. String of Hearts (Ceropegia woodii)

The String of Hearts was my first foray into water-grown vines, and it’s still a family favorite. Its heart-shaped leaves with delicate white patterns never fail to make me smile.

Care Tips:

  • Place in bright indirect sunlight
  • Change water every 7 to 10 days

I keep ours in the kitchen window, and my kids love helping me “give it a drink” when we change the water.

2. Pothos (Epipremnum aureum)

Pothos is often mistaken for Philodendron, but trust me, once you grow it, you’ll never confuse them again!

Care Tips:

  • Find a warm spot
  • Provide bright indirect light

Our pothos thrives on top of our bookshelf, adding a cascade of green to our reading nook.

3. Rex Begonia Vine

When I want to add a touch of elegance to a room, I always turn to the Rex Begonia Vine. Its unique foliage is like living art.

Care Tips:

  • Choose bright spots without harsh direct sunlight

This beauty sits on my office desk, making even the toughest workdays a bit more bearable.

4. Inch Plant (Tradescantia zebrina)

Also known as Wandering Dew, this plant has become a fast favorite in our house.

Care Tips:

  • Provide bright indirect sunlight all day long

We have ours hanging in a sunny corner of the living room, and it’s grown so much that the kids have nicknamed it “The Waterfall”.

5. Satin Pothos (Scindapsus pictus ‘Argyraeus’)

The magnificent blue hue of the Satin Pothos adds a touch of magic to any room.

Care Tips:

  • Place in bright indirect sunlight
  • Change water regularly

This one lives in our bathroom, turning an ordinary space into a mini spa retreat.

6. English Ivy

English Ivy (and its cousin, Wax Ivy) has been a game-changer for us. It’s so easy to propagate that we’ve given cuttings as gifts to half the neighborhood!

Care Tips:

  • Easily propagated and grown in water

Our English Ivy drapes beautifully over our kitchen cabinets, adding a whimsical touch to meal prep time.

7. Philodendron

Philodendron has quickly become one of our most popular houseplants. It’s practically indestructible, which is perfect for our busy household.

Care Tips:

  • Place in a glass of water
  • Provide bright indirect sunlight

We have several dotted around the house, but my favorite is the one climbing up a trellis in our entryway.

8. Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa)

The Swiss Cheese Plant never fails to spark joy in our home. Its unique leaves are a constant source of fascination for the kids.

Propagation:

  • Take a cutting from a healthy plant

Care Tips:

  • Find a warm, well-lit spot

Ours sits in a corner of the dining room, slowly but surely becoming the centerpiece of family dinners.

9. Silver Vine

Known for its air-purifying qualities, the Silver Vine has earned its place in our bedroom.

Care Tips:

  • Change water regularly

I swear we all sleep better with this little beauty working its magic overnight.

10. Arrowhead Vine

Last but not least, the Arrowhead Vine brings a touch of the tropics to our home office.

Care Tips:

  • Tolerant of lower light conditions

Native to Central and South America, its arrowhead-shaped leaves add a unique texture to our plant collection.
