10 Long Blooming Perennial Flowers: Add Vibrant Colors to Your Garden All Season Long

Written by Emily Belkoff

Listen, I’m going to let you in on my biggest gardening secret – flowers that basically take care of themselves!

Before I found these gems, I was that frustrated mom trying to keep my garden alive while chasing toddlers and juggling a million other things.

But everything changed when another mom at school told me about perennials that bloom for months and come back year after year.

1. Echinacea (Coneflower)

My love affair with Echinacea started when I spotted these stunning natives at my local garden center. Their bold, daisy-like petals instantly caught my eye.

These hardy performers come in everything from classic purple to fiery oranges and reds, standing proudly at 2-4 feet tall.

What really sold me was their drought tolerance and ability to attract butterflies. My kids love watching the pollinators dance around these flowers all summer long.

I’ve even started making immune-boosting tea from the dried petals – talk about a multi-purpose plant!

2. Coreopsis (Tickseed)

If you’re looking for a cheerful addition to your garden, Coreopsis is your answer. These North American natives have become my go-to for filling containers and borders.

The yellow, orange, and pink blooms with contrasting centers create such a happy display that I can’t help but smile every time I look out my kitchen window.

At 1-3 feet tall, they’re the perfect height for my mixed flower beds, and I love cutting them for indoor bouquets.

3. Salvia (Sage)

As someone who constantly battles deer in my garden, Salvia has been a game-changer. These elegant spikes of tubular flowers in blues, purples, reds, and whites stand tall and untouched.

The hummingbirds absolutely adore them, and I’ve positioned several plants near my patio so we can watch these tiny visitors throughout the day.

Their drought tolerance means I don’t have to worry about constant watering during our hot summers.

4. Nepeta (Catmint)

Our family cat isn’t the only one who adores this plant! The lavender-blue flowers and aromatic gray-green foliage create a soft, cottage-garden feel.

I’ve planted Nepeta along my walkway, where brushing against it releases its lovely fragrance.

It’s proven to be incredibly resilient in both full sun and partial shade, and the deer leave it completely alone.

5. Gaillardia (Blanket Flower)

These cheerful daisy-like blooms have earned a special place in my heart. Their warm-toned petals in red, yellow, and orange remind me of a desert sunset.

While I do have to protect them from deer, their drought tolerance and long blooming period make them worth the extra effort.

They’ve become the stars of my container gardens, bringing southwestern charm to my porch all season long.

6. Rudbeckia (Black-eyed Susans)

Nothing says “summer” quite like these golden beauties with their distinctive dark centers. They’ve become the backbone of my mid-summer to fall garden.

At 1-3 feet tall, they create the perfect backdrop for shorter perennials and add a bright pop of sunshine to cut flower arrangements.

While deer do enjoy them, I’ve found that strategic placement near the house helps protect these cheerful bloomers.

7. Penstemon (Beard Tongue)

The elegant tubular blooms of Penstemon add a touch of sophistication to my garden. Their range of colors from deep reds to soft blues provides endless design possibilities.

As a busy mom, I appreciate how these native plants thrive with minimal attention, while still attracting loads of hummingbirds.

They’ve proven particularly successful in my rock garden, where their drought tolerance really shines.

8. Geranium (Cranesbills)

Don’t confuse these with annual geraniums! These hardy perennials have become my secret weapon for ground cover in tricky spots.

Their saucer-shaped flowers in pink, purple, white, and blue create a gorgeous carpet of color.

I especially love how they thrive in both sunny and partially shaded areas, making them perfect for those challenging spots under trees.

9. Phlox

The sweet fragrance of garden phlox makes evening walks through my garden absolutely magical. These tall beauties provide the perfect backdrop to shorter perennials.

Their clusters of pink, purple, red, and white flowers last from mid-summer to early fall, creating a stunning display.

While they do require protection from deer, their beautiful cut flowers and enchanting scent make them worth the effort.

10. Helenium (Sneezeweed)

Don’t let the name fool you – these late-season stunners don’t actually cause sneezing! They’ve become my secret weapon for extending the garden season.

Standing proud at 3-5 feet tall, their daisy-like flowers in red, orange, and yellow provide a magnificent finale to the growing season.

I’ve found they perform best with consistent moisture, but the late-season color display is worth the extra watering.
