10 Moisture Loving Perennials That Thrive In Wet Soil Wet Garden Plants

Written by Emily Belkoff

Ever look at that swampy spot in your yard and just want to cry? Trust me, I’ve been there! But don’t give up – these plants actually love having wet feet.

They turned the ugliest part of my yard into something beautiful, and they can do the same for yours!

Top 10 Moisture-Loving Perennials

1. Iris

I’ll never forget spotting my first iris along a riverbank during a family hike. These elegant beauties absolutely captivated me!

With over 200 species available, there’s an iris for everyone, but I particularly love the bearded iris (Iris germanica) for beginners like I was when I started.

Their tall, slender stems create such graceful movement in the garden, and they actually prefer those tricky spots where the soil stays consistently moist.

2. Canna Lily

Want to add some serious drama to your garden? Canna lilies are your answer!

These show-stoppers have become my go-to solution for those spots where rainwater tends to linger after storms.

I’ve found that planting them in groups creates the most spectacular display – my neighbors constantly ask about the tropical paradise I’ve created in my suburban backyard!

3. Spiderwort (Tradescantia)

These charming flowers have become my secret weapon for continuous color throughout the season.

While each bloom only lasts a day, these persistent performers keep producing new flowers day after day.

I’ve noticed that my spiderwort actually produces more vibrant blooms in my wetter garden areas, though they’re tough enough to handle drier spells too.

4. Cardinal Flower (Lobelia cardinalis)

The first time I planted cardinal flowers, I was amazed by how they transformed my soggy stream-side garden into a hummingbird haven.

Their deep red petals provide such intense color that they’ve become the focal point of my late summer garden.

These native beauties absolutely thrive in high-rainfall areas, making them perfect for those challenging wet spots.

5. Elephant’s Ear (Colocasia esculenta)

If you’re looking to create a tropical oasis, elephant’s ears are a must-have!

I learned the hard way to give these giants plenty of space – they’ve taken over more than one garden bed in my experience.

Their massive leaves create such an exotic atmosphere that my kids call our backyard “the jungle.”

6. Swamp Sunflower (Helianthus angustifolius)

These cheerful flowers bring a ray of sunshine to my late-season garden.

I originally planted them in a particularly swampy corner where nothing else would grow, and they’ve turned it into a golden paradise.

The pollinators absolutely adore them, and I love watching the bees and butterflies dance among the blooms.

7. Astilbe

These feathery plumes have transformed the shady, damp corner under my maple tree into a magical garden feature.

I especially love how they come in so many colors – from pure white to deep purple.

They’re like nature’s own mood lighting, adding a soft, dreamy quality to any wet, shaded area.

8. Horsetail (Equisetum)

There’s something absolutely fascinating about growing a plant that dinosaurs might have seen!

The bamboo-like stems create such interesting vertical lines in my garden design.

Just a word of caution from personal experience: plant these in contained areas, as they can spread enthusiastically.

9. Marsh Marigold (Caltha palustris)

These cheerful yellow blooms are always the first to announce spring in my garden.

Their glossy green leaves and bright flowers make them look like they’re straight out of a fairy tale.

I’ve found they’re absolutely perfect for brightening up the edges of my small garden pond.

10. Ostrich Fern

These graceful ferns have turned the dreary, damp corner behind my garage into a lush woodland retreat.

Their arching fronds remind me of elegant ostrich plumes, creating movement even on still days.

They’re my go-to solution for those challenging spots where shade and moisture combine.
