10 Most Expensive Houseplants in the World

Written by Emily Belkoff

When I started my plant collection, I thought spending $50 on a monstera was extravagant. Little did I know about the truly expensive houseplants out there!

Join me as we discover the 10 most costly green beauties that’ll make your eyes pop.

Top 10 Most Expensive Houseplants in the World

1. Queen of the Night

This flowering succulent holds a special place in my heart. Native to Sri Lanka and other Indian subcontinent countries, it’s considered one of the most stunning flowers in the world.

What makes it truly magical is that it blooms only at night. Its fleeting beauty and rarity make it a coveted addition to any plant collection.

2. Juliet Rose

While the actual cost of this flower is around $50 to $60, its true value lies in its development.

Can you believe it took 15 years and a whopping $5 million to create? It’s like raising a child, but with petals! The Juliet Rose made its grand debut at the 2006 Chelsea Flower Show.

3. 250-Year-Old Juniper Bonsai Tree

Imagine owning a living piece of history! This ancient bonsai sold for an eye-watering $2 million in 1981.

While I haven’t seen an actual photograph, just thinking about the stories this tree could tell gives me goosebumps.

4. 800-Year-Old Bonsai Tree

Speaking of living history, this miniature white pine tree fetched $1.3 million at the International Bonsai Convention in Japan in 2011.

Its age and rich history make it a true horticultural masterpiece.

5. Shenzhen Nongke Orchid

This rare beauty is a testament to scientific dedication. Developed over 8+ years, it takes 4-5 years to bloom.

As someone who gets impatient waiting for my succulents to grow, I can only imagine the excitement when this orchid finally blossoms!

6. Oblique Monstera

Often called the “more hole than leaf” plant, this rare Monstera sold for a staggering $23,000.

Be cautious though – many listings are scams, with sellers trying to pass off the more common Monstera adansonii as this prized variety.

7. Variegated Monstera Minima

While a regular Monstera Minima might set you back $50-$100, the variegated version is a whole different story.

Its rarity makes it highly sought after, especially on auction sites like New Zealand’s TradeMe.

8. Hindu Rope Plant (Hoya carnosa compacta)

This quirky plant, also known as the Hindu Rope, sold for $6,500 on TradeMe in 2020.

Its unique twisted leaves always remind me of a botanical roller coaster!

9. Pink Princess Philodendron

Named 2019’s must-have plant by Horticulture Week, this beauty sold for $1,999.95 on Etsy.

Its half-moon variegation makes it look like it’s blushing, adding a touch of whimsy to any plant collection.

10. Monstera Thai Constellation

With its stunning white and green variegation, this Monstera variety stands out from the crowd.

Expect to shell out $300 to $500 for one of these beauties. It’s like having a piece of the night sky right in your living room!
