10 Ornamental Plants for Shade (Plants that Do Well in Shade)

Written by Emily Belkoff

As a busy mom trying to beautify every corner of my home, I’ve always struggled with those dark, shady spots that seem impossible to decorate.

After years of trial and error (and quite a few plant casualties!), I’ve discovered these amazing shade-loving plants that have transformed my gloomy corners into gorgeous green spaces.

1. Japanese Maple

My absolute favorite shade plant has to be the Japanese Maple. I started with one small pot by my front door, where it only gets a few hours of morning sun.

These beauties come in adorable dwarf varieties like Makawa and Yatsubusu, perfect for smaller spaces or containers.

I’ve fallen in love with the Murasaki keohimi variety, which adds such a lovely pop of color to my shaded porch.

2. Hellebore

Looking for something that blooms when everything else looks dead? Hellebores are your answer!

These stunning flowers brighten up my late winter garden when I’m desperately craving some color.

I keep a few in containers indoors too, and they’re thriving in their semi-shaded spot by my living room window.

3. Impatiens

Remember those gorgeous rose-like blooms your grandma used to grow? Those were probably double impatiens!

I’ve planted them in every shade of pink, purple, red, and lavender I could find, and they’re absolutely stunning.

Just give them well-draining soil and regular water, and they’ll reward you with endless blooms in those tricky shady spots.

4. Primrose

Talk about a foolproof plant! My primroses have survived everything from my forgetful watering schedule to my toddler’s “gardening” adventures.

Their rosette-shaped leaves look beautiful even when they’re not blooming.

I keep several in containers around my house – they’re perfect for brightening up those dark corners.

5. Coleus

If you’re a busy mom like me who needs low-maintenance plants, coleus is your new best friend.

The colors on these leaves are absolutely incredible – no flowers needed!

Just remember to water them regularly, and they’ll keep those vibrant colors coming all season long.

6. Persian Shield

This plant was my impulse buy at the garden center last year, and wow, what a showstopper!

Those dark green leaves with purple stripes and silver borders look like they were painted by an artist.

Even though it’s supposed to like sun, mine is thriving in my shaded entryway.

7. Ornamental Asparagus

Don’t let the name fool you – this isn’t your dinner veggie! This elegant plant has become my go-to recommendation for first-time plant parents.

It’s perfect for apartment living and doesn’t mind cooler spots one bit.

The feathery foliage adds such a lovely, delicate touch to any space.

8. Fuchsia

Now, I’ll be honest – fuchsias can be a bit dramatic (like my teenagers!), but they’re worth the extra attention.

Those gorgeous brick-red blooms hanging down from baskets are simply spectacular.

I mix them with other shade-loving plants in containers for the most amazing summer displays.

9. Silver Falls

This trailing beauty has stolen my heart with its soft, heart-shaped leaves.

I have it spilling out of window boxes and hanging baskets all around my shaded patio.

The silvery foliage catches what little light there is and practically glows in the shade.

10. Begonia

Last but definitely not least, begonias are my ultimate shade-loving companions.

The newer varieties even have a lovely fragrance – a bonus I discovered when watering them one morning.

Just keep them out of direct sunlight, ensure good drainage, and they’ll be happy as can be.
