10 Rare Plants WORTH Every Penny (Uncommon Houseplants That You Will Love)

Written by Emily Belkoff

Finding good rare plants can be tricky. After years of buying too many plants (don’t tell my husband!), I’ve found some real gems.

Here are 10 uncommon houseplants that I absolutely love and think you will too!

10 Rare/Uncommon Plants Worth the Investment

1. Anthurium Radicans x Luxurians

This stunning hybrid has been on my wishlist forever, and I finally found it for just $34.95! Its elongated heart-shaped leaves are a deep, gorgeous green with a quilted texture. The red stems add a beautiful contrast.

What I love most about this plant is how easy it is to care for. Its thick leaves make it drought-tolerant, and it doesn’t mind being away from the window. Unlike my other anthuriums, this one doesn’t crisp up from lack of humidity. It’s truly a 10 out of 10 in my book!

2. Aglaonema Pictum Tricolor Peacock

I’m obsessed with this unique aglaonema, which I snagged for $31.99. Its elongated leaves set it apart from other tricolors, featuring a gorgeous camouflage pattern.

Despite struggling with other aglaonemas in the past, this one has been thriving for me. It’s been putting out new growth and seems happy with medium light. I water it when it’s about halfway to fully dry, and it’s been doing great with my somewhat neglectful care routine.

3. Philodendron Warscewiczii

This bright yellow philodendron is a showstopper in my collection. I got it for $44.95, which was a steal considering how unique it is. Even in its juvenile form, it’s absolutely stunning.

What’s impressive about this plant is its hardiness. Despite my somewhat neglectful care, it’s been thriving with medium light and watering when it’s about halfway to fully dry. The lime green color extends from its leaves to its aerial roots and stem, making it a true standout.

4. Philodendron Jose Buono

I wasn’t expecting to fall in love with this plant, but it’s become one of my favorites. It’s an easy-care philodendron that’s drought-tolerant and always putting out new growth.

The variegation on this plant is stunning and stable, even in cooler temperatures. I love that the leaves don’t brown like some white variegated plants. Each new leaf unfurls like a present, with unique patterns and increasing size. At around $45, it’s definitely worth adding to your collection.

5. Syngonium Panda Galaxy

For syngonium lovers, this is a must-have! I found it for just $16.99, and it’s been a delightful addition to my collection. The dark green leaves are beautifully accented with white or light lime green spots.

This plant has been incredibly easy to care for, like most syngoniums. The variegation seems stable, and it’s been putting out tons of new growth. I love how the dark leaves make the variegation pop, and it doesn’t crisp up like some of my other variegated syngoniums.

6. Epipremnum Amplissimum Variegata

If you’re a pothos fan, this is a fantastic uncommon variety to add to your collection. I found it for $80, which felt like a steal given its rarity and beauty.

This plant has been a fast grower for me, constantly putting out new runners and shoots. The variegation is gorgeous, with some leaves displaying half-moon patterns and beautiful lime green accents. It’s been easy to care for and propagate, making it a great investment.

7. Crassula ‘Mermaid Tail’ (Cesio Vitalis Crested)

Succulent lovers, this one’s for you! I stumbled upon this beauty for just $4.95, which was an incredible deal. Its unique fan-like growth pattern resembles a mermaid’s tail, making it a true conversation starter.

Despite being a succulent, it’s been one of my fastest-growing plants. It has a gorgeous blue chalky color and thrives with plenty of light. While it enjoys a good drink when fully dry, it’s not high-maintenance at all. It’s definitely a cool and easy-care addition to any succulent collection.

8. Begonia ‘Harmony Quasimoto’

This unique begonia is part of the Harmony Begonias collection, known for their silver-tipped leaves. The Quasimoto variety stands out with its distinctive leaf shape and dark coloration.

I started with a tiny cutting, and it’s grown impressively fast. The leaves have a unique pointed shape that becomes more dramatic as the plant grows larger. With its easy care requirements and stunning appearance, it’s definitely worth adding to your collection.

9. Hoya Globosa

As a Hoya lover, I couldn’t resist this uncommon variety. I found it for $32.98, and it’s been a delightful addition to my collection. The long, dark green leaves have beautiful indentations, but the most interesting feature is the fuzzy texture on the back of the leaves.

Like most Hoyas, it’s been easy to care for and drought-tolerant. The fuzzy texture adds a fun tactile element, making it perfect for plant lovers who enjoy interacting with their plants. It’s a great choice for those who struggle with humidity, as it doesn’t require much.

10. Monstera Adansonii ‘Mint’

For Monstera adansonii fans, this variegated form is a dream come true. I splurged a bit on this one, paying $120, but it’s been worth every penny. The mint variegation adds a beautiful twist to the classic Swiss cheese plant.

While I haven’t had it for long, it’s already putting out new growth with even more variegation than the older leaves. If it’s anything like my other adansonii plants, it should be relatively easy to care for. I’m excited to watch it grow and potentially propagate it in the future.
