14 of the Best Trailing House Plants (Hanging Indoor Plants)

Written by Emily Belkoff

I’ve always loved plants that hang down and trail. They just make a room feel cozier, you know?

If you’re looking to add some green to your home, I’ve got 14 awesome hanging plants to show you.

Trust me, they’ll make your place look amazing!

14 Best Trailing House Plants

1. Golden Pothos

I remember when I first brought home a Golden Pothos – it was love at first sight! This twining vine is a perfect choice for beginners like I was back then. You can let it hang gracefully or train it along a wire for a more structured look.

What I love most about Golden Pothos is how easy it is to propagate. I’ve shared countless cuttings with friends and family, simply by snipping a stem and placing it in water.

2. Heart Leaf Philodendron

The Heart Leaf Philodendron holds a special place in my indoor garden. Its beautiful vines work wonderfully in hanging baskets, adding a touch of romance to any room.

I’ve found that this plant is quite forgiving when it comes to watering. I only water mine when the top of the soil feels dry to the touch.

3. Orchid Cactus

If you’re a fan of show-stopping blooms like I am, the Orchid Cactus is a must-have. The first time mine produced its big red flowers, I was absolutely mesmerized.

This plant thrives in hanging baskets, with its long fleshy stems cascading over the sides in a dramatic display.

4. Satin Pothos

The Satin Pothos, with its satiny leaves splashed with silver, is a true stunner. I love how it adds a touch of elegance to my home office.

As a busy mom, I appreciate that this slow-growing vine can tolerate a bit of neglect when life gets hectic.

5. Red Herringbone Plant (Prayer Plant)

The Red Herringbone Plant, also known as the Prayer Plant, brings a pop of color and intricate patterns to my indoor jungle.

I’ll admit, this beauty requires a bit more attention than some of my other plants. It needs careful consideration when it comes to water and humidity, but the visual impact is well worth the extra effort.

6. Staghorn Fern

The Staghorn Fern is one of the more unique plants in my collection. Its peculiar and grand appearance never fails to spark conversations when guests visit.

This fern prefers a bright, humid spot out of direct sunlight. While it’s been a bit more challenging to grow, the sense of accomplishment I feel is unmatched.

7. String of Pearls

The String of Pearls is truly a conversation starter. Its leaves, resembling delicate rows of peas, create a beautiful statement in my indoor garden.

I have mine displayed in a macramé hanger near a window, and it never fails to catch the eye.

8. Burro’s Tail

The Burro’s Tail is a sensational succulent that I absolutely adore. Not only is it easy to grow, but it’s also a breeze to propagate.

I’ve created several new plants from a single mother plant, making it a great option for expanding your collection on a budget.

9. String of Hearts

The String of Hearts is a curious-looking plant that adds whimsy to any space. Its tiny flowers resemble pink pepper pots, adding a delightful surprise when they bloom.

As a beginner-friendly plant, it’s one I often recommend to friends just starting their plant parenthood journey.

10. Fishbone Cactus

The Fishbone Cactus is a true delight for the senses. When it produces its large, scented yellow and white flowers, it transforms my entire living room.

The unique shape of its leaves adds an interesting texture to my plant collection.

11. Chain Cactus

I’ll be honest, the Chain Cactus has been one of my more challenging plants to grow. However, the small white flowers it produces in spring make all the effort worthwhile.

It’s taught me patience and perseverance in my plant care journey.

12. Coral Cactus (Mistletoe Cactus)

The Coral Cactus, also known as Mistletoe Cactus, is a fascinating addition to any plant collection. Its slender stems bear charming white bell-shaped flowers.

I love watching the lifecycle of this plant, from flowers to the spherical white fruits that follow.

13. Wax Plant

The Wax Plant is a fantastic canyon plant that has become a centerpiece in my sunroom. It bears clusters of small white scented flowers that look like little ice gems.

The sweet fragrance it produces during blooming season is simply heavenly.

14. Curly Locks Orchid Cactus

Last but not least, the Curly Locks Orchid Cactus brings a touch of whimsy with its coiling stems. When it produces its yellowish-white flowers, it’s truly a sight to behold.

This unique plant always draws attention and sparks curiosity among my plant-loving friends.
