20 Best Tall Perennial Flowers

Written by Emily Belkoff

As a mom of three with a passion for gardening, I’ve always been fascinated by how plants can transform our living spaces.

But recently, I stumbled upon something truly magical – tall perennial flowers that add drama, color, and life to outdoor gardens.

In this article, I’ll take you on a journey through 20 stunning tall perennials that have captured my heart and transformed my garden.

1. Purple Passion Plant (Gynura aurantiaca)

This stunning plant holds a special place in my heart. Its velvety leaves start as a vibrant green but develop a striking purple hue as they mature.

The purple fuzz covering the leaves gives it a unique texture that my youngest can’t resist touching. It’s been a great way to teach her about different plant textures!

2. Coleus (Plectranthus scutellarioides)

Coleus plants are like nature’s paintbrushes. Their leaves come in a dazzling array of colors that can change depending on light exposure.

I have a few varieties in our sunroom, and it’s fascinating to watch their colors shift throughout the seasons.

3. Croton (Codiaeum variegatum)

The first time I brought a croton home, I was amazed by its bold, multicolored leaves. As it grows, new leaves emerge in different shades, creating a living rainbow.

My kids love trying to spot new colors appearing on our croton!

4. Caladium

With heart-shaped leaves that can display pink, red, and green hues, caladiums are like living valentines.

I planted some in decorative pots for our bedrooms, and they’ve added such a romantic touch to our decor.

5. Nerve Plant (Fittonia albivenis)

This little plant packs a big punch with its intricate leaf patterns. The veins start white but can turn pink or red as the plant matures.

It’s become a favorite in our fairy garden setup, adding whimsy and color.

6. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)

I love how adaptable Chinese evergreens are. Their leaves can shift from deep green to silver, pink, or red depending on the variety and lighting conditions.

They’ve been perfect for brightening up some of our home’s darker corners.

7. Rex Begonia

With their swirling patterns and color changes, rex begonias are like nature’s mood rings.

My oldest daughter has one in her room and loves documenting its color changes in her plant journal.

8. Polka Dot Plant (Hypoestes phyllostachya)

These charming plants start with white or pink spots that can darken and spread as the leaves mature.

They’ve become a staple in our kitchen windowsill garden, adding a playful pop of color.

9. Prayer Plant (Maranta leuconeura)

Not only do prayer plants have beautiful leaf patterns that can change color, but they also move throughout the day!

Watching the leaves fold up at night has become a bedtime ritual for our family.

10. Peperomia Caperata ‘Rosso’

Last but not least, this little gem has deep green leaves that develop a reddish-purple underside as they mature.

It’s been a subtle but stunning addition to our plant collection.

Final Thoughts

Bringing these color-changing plants into our home has been an incredible journey. They’ve not only beautified our space but also sparked curiosity and a love for nature in our children.
