28 Houseplants with Most Weird and Unusual Leaves

Written by Emily Belkoff

Did you know there are houseplants with leaves that look like stingrays, wine cups, or even jellyfish?

After years of growing regular plants, I’ve found 28 varieties with the weirdest and most wonderful leaves.

These aren’t your everyday plant leaves – they’re absolutely spectacular!

1. Butterfly Begonia

I was instantly captivated by this rare tropical beauty. The leaves look exactly like butterfly wings, with their shiny green surface and rippled margins. What makes it truly special are the crimson red spots scattered across each leaf, catching light like tiny rubies.

2. Jellyfish Air Plant

Who knew air plants could create such magic? By hanging them upside down in sea urchin shells, they transform into ethereal jellyfish floating in mid-air. My kids think we have an actual aquarium in our living room!

3. Butterfly Wing Plant

This stunning plant never fails to amaze visitors with its triangular green leaves. The burgundy patterns create a perfect illusion of butterfly wings mid-flutter. It’s like having permanent butterflies gracing your home.

4. Jewel Orchid

Talk about nature’s light show! The green leaves feature the most incredible gold veining that seems to glow from within. It reminds me of lightning frozen in time, creating a spectacular display in my plant corner.

5. Similar to Schefflera

This unique beauty caught my eye because it looks like a familiar friend with a twist. While it resembles the common Schefflera, it fans out in the most elegant way. I’ve learned to keep it away from harsh afternoon sun and am careful not to overwater.

6. Heart Leaf Fern

Sometimes the simplest things capture our hearts the most. True to its name, each leaf is shaped like a stretched heart, adding a touch of romance to my plant collection.

7. Leopard Plant

This showstopper has become a focal point in my sunroom. Its large, round leaves curve downward dramatically, covered in beautiful speckles that remind me of its namesake. I give it plenty of morning sunlight, and it rewards me with the most gorgeous growth.

8. Striped Begonia

My bathroom has become this beauty’s perfect home. The leaves sport stunning cream and green stripes that give it a jewel-like appearance. I keep a pebble tray underneath for extra humidity, and it thrives away from direct sunlight.

9. Seersucker Plant

This plant is perfect for those who love unique textures. The leaves have the most interesting undulating or puckered surface that reminds me of my grandmother’s favorite seersucker dress.

10. Wine Cup

This charming succulent looks like it’s ready for a tiny celebration. The unbranched stems hold round bright green leaves with raised coiled edges that perfectly mimic little wine cups.

11. Tracheandra

This quirky little plant has become one of my favorites. Its fleshy, spiral leaves are springy and often hairy, giving it tons of personality. I’m careful to use well-draining soil and avoid overwatering.

12. Cooperai Haworthia

Looking at this plant is like peering into a bubble collection. The plump, transparent fleshy green leaves cluster together beautifully. I keep it in my south-facing window where it gets 4-5 hours of bright morning light.

13. Starfish Cactus

The layered foliage of this fascinating plant creates a star-shaped pattern that’s simply mesmerizing. I grow it in a special mix of soil with plenty of perlite and vermiculite for perfect drainage.

14. Corkscrew Rush

This plant looks like it’s having a bad hair day – in the best possible way! Its coiled spiral shape sprawls in different directions, creating the most interesting silhouette.

15. Venus Fly Trap

My kids are absolutely fascinated by this carnivorous conversation piece. The bristly leaves fold into hinged lobes with thorny edges, using sweet nectar to lure unsuspecting insects.

16. Crinkle Leaf Plant

The triangle-shaped leaves on this unique plant are a textural dream. Covered in tiny hairs with wavy, crinkled edges, it thrives in both full sun and partial shade locations.

17. Densely Corrunculated Plant

This easy-growing beauty features the most intriguingly textured leaves. I keep it in partial sun and make sure it never sits in water.

18. Chinese Jade

This unusual crested form of Crassula Uninsus is a real head-turner. Its distinct fan-shaped growth pattern makes it stand out from other succulents. I keep it on the dry side, and it seems to thrive on neglect.

19. Pangolin

Named after the unique animal, this succulent’s leaves mimic the overlapping scales of its namesake. It reminds me of the fascinating pangolin that feeds on termites and ants.

20. Marimo Moss Ball

Don’t let the name fool you – this isn’t actually moss at all! It’s a rare algae that forms perfect velvet-like spheres. When brown spots appear, I add a pinch of ocean salt to its water.

21. Spiralis Cactus

This trunkless wonder features a mesmerizing blue-green spiral stem. It branches at the base like a candelabra, creating an architectural statement piece.

22. Alocasia Stingray

True to its name, the leaves of this stunning plant feature distinctive tails and wings that look just like gliding stingrays. It’s like having an underwater scene right in your living room.

23. Parachute Plant

The twining stems support fascinating light green leaves with perforated patterns that look like polka dots. I grow mine in clay pots with plenty of drainage holes and gritty compost.

24. Baby’s Necklace

This charming succulent looks just like a string of beads. The round gray-green leaves with red edges stack perfectly, creating a living necklace. I water deeply but only when the soil is completely dry.

25. Ant Plant

This trailing variety features the most unusual swollen pocket foliage. The hollow leaves, known as bullate leaves, make it a true conversation starter in my plant collection.

26. Hurricane Cactus

This unique cactus features long, segmented green stems decorated with small white hair clusters instead of spines. In full sun, it transforms into beautiful shades of pink and maroon.

27. Vietnam Ferox

This begonia variety is truly one of a kind. Its leaves feature raised black cones that look like tiny teeth, with wavy, hairy edges that add extra character.

28. Philodendron Fun Bun

The grand finale of my unusual plant collection! Its large, spiraling stems create a circular arrangement of glossy green leaves that never fails to draw attention.
