7 Easy to Care Flowers for Cottage Garden

Written by Emily Belkoff

Have you ever dreamed of having a charming cottage garden but worried it might be too complicated?

I felt the same way when I first started gardening. After years of trial and error, I’ve discovered these seven gorgeous, low-maintenance flowers that have transformed my backyard into the cottage garden of my dreams.

1. Lavender

I absolutely adore lavender! It’s been a game-changer in my garden.

The sweet, calming scent fills my yard on warm summer days, and I love running my hands through it when I walk past.

What makes lavender perfect for busy moms is how little care it needs. Just give it some water and an occasional haircut (pruning), and it’ll thrive practically anywhere.

2. Foxglove

If you’re looking for some height and drama in your garden, foxglove is your answer.

These tall beauties come in the prettiest shades of pink, purple, and white. My kids love watching the hummingbirds that visit them all summer long.

The best part? Once you plant foxglove, it spreads on its own. Talk about a plant that does the work for you!

3. Coneflower

Coneflowers have become my go-to flower for filling empty spaces in the garden.

They’re total troopers – they don’t mind if you forget to water them sometimes, and they keep blooming all summer long.

My garden is always buzzing with bees and butterflies thanks to these cheerful flowers.

4. Black-Eyed Susan

These sunny yellow flowers bring such joy to my garden! They remind me of little sunbursts dotting the landscape.

I love cutting them for kitchen bouquets, and they last forever in vases.

Plus, they’re practically impossible to kill – perfect for those of us who weren’t blessed with a natural green thumb!

5. Sunflower

Who doesn’t smile when they see sunflowers? These gentle giants are my kids’ absolute favorites.

We plant them along our back fence every year, and it’s become a family tradition to measure who’s taller – the kids or the flowers!

The finches go crazy for the seeds in fall, turning our garden into a delightful bird sanctuary.

6. Hydrangea

These showstoppers have taught me that sometimes bigger is better when it comes to flowers.

My hydrangeas are like nature’s mood rings – they change color depending on the soil (mine turn the most gorgeous shade of blue).

They do need regular drinks of water, but they’re worth every drop for those massive, fluffy blooms.

7. Peony

Oh, peonies! These are the divas of my garden, but they’re so beautiful that I forgive their short blooming season.

Once they’re settled in, they’ll bloom faithfully year after year with barely any effort on your part.

I’ve had the same peonies for years now, and they’re still going strong – talk about getting your money’s worth!

Benefits of These Garden Favorites

My cottage garden has become more than just a collection of plants – it’s our family’s outdoor sanctuary.

These seven flowers have brought so much life to our yard. We get daily visits from butterflies, bees, and birds, making our garden feel magical.

The best part? These plants are so easy to care for that I actually have time to sit and enjoy my garden instead of constantly working in it.

Remember, gardening doesn’t have to be complicated or time-consuming. Start with these friendly flowers, and before you know it, you’ll have the cottage garden you’ve always wanted. Trust me, if I can do it, anyone can!
