7 Gorgeous Shrubs That Bloom With White Flowers

Written by Emily Belkoff

I’ve fallen head over heels for white flowering shrubs. They’ve completely transformed the darker corners of my garden into stunning focal points that literally glow in the evening light!

If you’re looking to add some enchanting white blooms to your landscape, I’m excited to share my favorite picks with you.

1. Korean Spice Viburnum

Oh my goodness, this shrub totally stole my heart last spring! The pink buds open into the most gorgeous clusters of white flowers.

What really got me was the amazing smell – it’s like a perfect mix of sweet and spicy that fills our whole backyard.

I learned the hard way that this beauty needs acidic soil to really thrive. Now I just toss some pine needles around the base as mulch and give it acid-enhanced fertilizer once a year, and it’s happy as can be!

2. Common Lilac

If you’ve never buried your nose in white lilac blooms, you’re missing out on one of life’s sweetest pleasures.

These late-spring bloomers have become my go-to for fragrant bouquets, with flower clusters bigger than my hand!

Just a heads up from my garden mistakes – these pretties are total divas about drainage. Mine sulked for a whole season until I fixed our soggy soil issue with some amendments.

3. Japanese Andromeda

Here’s a funny story – I actually sniffed this plant at the nursery before buying it (and got some weird looks)! The bell-shaped flowers have quite a unique scent that some people love and others… well, not so much.

What I absolutely adore about this shrub is that it’s evergreen, so it keeps my garden looking alive even in winter.

Those red-tinted leaves and early blooms make it a total showstopper in my front yard, and it’s grown into a gorgeous 9-foot statement piece.

4. Mock Orange

This gentle giant has become my absolute favorite for our evening patio gatherings. The subtle citrusy scent is just perfect – not too overwhelming but definitely noticeable.

I will say, though – don’t make my mistake of ignoring it for too long! Mine turned into a 12-foot monster that needed some serious tough love (aka hard pruning) to get it back in shape.

5. Azaleas

These beauties have taught me that timing is everything in gardening. Depending on which variety you choose, you can have gorgeous white blooms in early or late spring.

I’ve planted several different sizes around our woodland-style backyard, from cute little 2-footers to impressive 15-foot specimens.

Just remember they’re acid-loving plants – I keep mine happy with special fertilizer, and they reward me with the most amazing blooms!

6. Hydrangea

The ‘Incrediball’ variety in my garden is simply incredible (pun intended!). The flower heads are literally the size of dinner plates!

I love how the white blooms last from early summer right through fall, gradually turning to a beautiful warm brown.

My best tip? Plant these where they’ll get morning sun but afternoon shade. My ‘Annabelle’ variety near the porch is living its best life with this setup.

7. White Roses

White roses might sound fancy and difficult, but trust me – shrub roses are surprisingly easy to grow! They’ve become my go-to for adding elegance to our garden.

The fragrance is absolutely heavenly, and I love cutting a few blooms to bring inside for my kitchen windowsill.

Just remember to feed them well – I use a slow-release rose fertilizer, and they reward me with blooms that would make any gardener proud!

Wrapping Up

These white flowering shrubs have transformed my garden into a peaceful retreat that’s especially magical in the evening hours.

Whether you’re looking to brighten up a shady spot or create your own moon garden, these seven beauties are sure to bring joy to your outdoor space.
