7 Popular Evergreen Shrubs for Landscaping

Written by Emily Belkoff

You know that feeling when you look out at your yard and think it needs… something? That’s exactly how I felt before discovering the magic of evergreen shrubs.

As a busy mom trying to maintain a beautiful garden year-round, I’ve found these steadfast plants to be absolute lifesavers for keeping my landscape looking pulled together, even when I barely have time to brush my hair!

Essential Evergreen Shrubs for Your Garden

1. Rhododendron: The Showstopper

I absolutely adore my rhododendrons! These beauties are like the neighborhood socialites of the garden world – they look gorgeous standing alone or mingling in groups.

They’re perfect for dressing up those bare spots around the house or creating cozy woodland vibes in shady corners.

What really sold me was their thick, leather-like leaves that stay green (or sometimes turn this gorgeous bronze) all winter long.

2. Canadian Hemlock: The Privacy Queen

Looking for something to block out Mrs. Johnson’s wandering eyes next door? Canadian hemlock might be your new best friend!

These lacy-needled darlings can grow super tall (up to 75 feet!), but don’t let that scare you – there are plenty of compact varieties perfect for regular yards.

I love how they create this gorgeous green wall when trimmed, making them perfect for those areas where you want a little extra privacy.

3. False Cypress: The Golden Child

Let me tell you about my favorite “happy accident” purchase! False cypress (also called Sawara cypress) brings this amazing whimsical golden color to the garden.

Instead of those prickly needles that make you regret gardening, these have the softest, most touchable foliage.

They’re perfect for smaller spaces since they take their sweet time growing – we’re talking 10 years to reach just 5 feet!

4. American Arborvitae: The Multi-Tasker

This is literally the Swiss Army knife of evergreens, folks! Whether you need something for your foundation plantings or a natural fence, arborvitae has got you covered.

I started with just one by my front door, and now I have them creating this gorgeous green backdrop all along my property line.

5. Mountain Laurel: The Wild Child

If you’re looking for something with personality, mountain laurel is your girl! With its twisted, gnarly growth habit and spring flowers that look like tiny pink and white party dresses, it’s impossible not to fall in love.

Mine have grown to look like mini trees with the coolest twisted trunks – totally giving my garden that enchanted forest vibe.

They’re absolutely stunning when planted in groups, especially around the foundation of your house.

6. Daphne Burkwoodii: The Drama Queen

Oh, Daphne – she’s beautiful but boy, can she be high-maintenance! This compact little diva grows to about 3-4 feet tall and puts on the most amazing fragrant flower show in spring.

I planted mine near my front walkway, and the scent literally stops visitors in their tracks!

Fair warning though: sometimes these beauties can be a bit temperamental and decide to check out without warning (trust me, I learned this the hard way!).

7. Taxus (Yew): The Reliable Friend

Last but definitely not least, we have the yew – basically the best friend of the evergreen world. Their deep green (almost black) needles are surprisingly soft to touch, not those needle-y pokey ones that make you regret pruning day.

They’re super easy to shape (perfect for when you’re feeling creative) and don’t mind shade at all.

I use mine as foundation plantings because they’re so low-maintenance – exactly what this busy mom needs in her life!
