7 Rare Indoor Climbing Ferns for Elegant Spaces

Written by Emily Belkoff

I’ve always loved having ferns around the house. But lately, I’ve gotten hooked on these cool climbing ferns that aren’t your average houseplants.

Want to see the 7 rare ones that have totally changed how my place looks?

1. Climbing Maiden Hair Fern

Characteristics

The Climbing Maiden Hair Fern, also known as snake fern or small leaf climbing fern, was my first foray into the world of climbing ferns. I was immediately captivated by its graceful gray-green leaves.

What I love most about this fern is its versatility – it thrives in both shady corners and sunny spots in my home. It’s like having a little piece of a fairy tale forest right in my living room!

2. Bushman’s Mattress

Unique Features

When I first heard the name “Bushman’s Mattress,” I couldn’t help but giggle. But once I saw it in person, I understood the moniker. This fern grows in a mesmerizing vine-like pattern, forming a captivating canopy.

I’ve given it a special place in my sunroom, where it has support to tangle and create a green masterpiece. It’s become quite the conversation starter when friends come over!

3. American Climbing Fern

Key Information

The American Climbing Fern, or Hartford Fern, holds a special place in my heart. Not only is it a beautiful addition to my indoor garden, but it’s also an endangered species in many states.

Its thin wiry stems and palmately lobed leaves add a delicate touch to my bright, sunny reading nook. Knowing I’m helping preserve this rare beauty makes it even more special.

4. Climbing Asparagus Fern

Distinctive Features

Don’t let the name fool you – the Climbing Asparagus Fern isn’t related to asparagus at all! This elegant fern has become a favorite of mine with its long wiry stems adorned with bright green feathery fronds.

I’ve placed it near a north-facing window where it basks in bright, indirect light. It’s like having a cascading green waterfall in my home office!

5. Wild Asian Climbing Fern

Growth Habits

The Wild Asian Climbing Fern is truly a marvel of nature. This evergreen beauty has creeping rhizomes that seem to extend indefinitely.

I’ve given it a special trellis in my living room, and it’s been a joy to watch it climb higher each week. It’s a sunny delight that adds a touch of the exotic to my indoor jungle.

6. Staghorn Fern

Characteristics

The Staghorn Fern is a trendy addition to my collection, and for good reason. Its distinct flat and long leaves resemble deer antlers, adding a unique flair to my bedroom.

I’ve found it thrives in a shaded corner with moderate moisture. Every morning, I wake up to this stunning piece of living art, and it never fails to bring a smile to my face.

7. Hay-scented Fern

Sensory Appeal

Last but certainly not least is the Hay-scented Fern. This fern is a treat for more than just the eyes. Its hay-like fragrance, which intensifies in fall, brings a touch of the countryside into my urban apartment.

I’ve placed it where it gets direct morning sunlight, and I love watching its bright green fronds turn a rustic brown in autumn. It’s like having a little piece of a fall meadow right in my home!
