7 Tricolor Houseplants with Fantastic Foliage

Written by Emily Belkoff

You know those days when you look around your house and think, “Ugh, everything looks so… blah”?

Well, I’ve got just the thing to perk up your space – tricolor houseplants!

These little beauties are like three plants in one, bringing a burst of color wherever you put them.

Stick with me, and I’ll show you my top seven picks that’ll make your home feel fresh and lively in no time.

1. Coleus

A Party on a Plant

The dazzling Coleus is like having a celebration right in your living room! Its leaves are a joyful dance of burgundy, cream, and purple, all edged with a pop of bright green. I’ve placed mine near a sunny window, and it never fails to catch my eye as I’m rushing around tidying up after the kids.

Care Requirements

Coleus thrives in bright, indirect light and well-draining soil. I water mine when the top inch of soil feels dry, and I pinch off any flower spikes to keep the foliage looking lush.

Home Decor Uses

I love using Coleus as a colorful accent in my home office. Its vibrant leaves add a cheerful touch to my workspace, making those long work-from-home days a little brighter.

2. Rex Begonia

A Table Decor Superstar

If you’re looking to jazz up your dining area, Rex Begonia is your go-to plant! With its variety of color combinations, it’s become the centerpiece of many family dinners at our house.

Care Tips

I’ve found that Rex Begonias prefer high humidity and indirect light. I mist mine regularly and keep it away from drafts to keep those gorgeous leaves looking their best.

Unique Varieties

From the swirling patterns of ‘Escargot’ to the metallic sheen of ‘Red Kiss’, there’s a Rex Begonia variety to suit every taste. My personal favorite is ‘Fireworks’, with its explosive pattern of pink, silver, and green.

3. Strawberry Begonia

Nature’s Little Art Pieces

Strawberry Begonia, with its round green leaves adorned in red and cream, reminds me of little works of art. I’ve hung one in my daughter’s room, and she loves watching the delicate runners cascade down.

Care Instructions

These beauties thrive in bright, indirect light. I water mine when the top of the soil feels dry and make sure to keep the leaves dry to prevent spotting.

Best Placement

I’ve found that Strawberry Begonias look stunning in hanging baskets or on high shelves where their trailing nature can really shine.

4. Poinsettia

A Festive Showstopper

Who says Poinsettias are just for Christmas? I keep mine year-round, loving the green, pink, and light pink/white combo that adds a festive touch to any room.

Seasonal Popularity

While they’re a holiday staple, I’ve found that Poinsettias can be a beautiful addition to your plant collection all year long.

Care Requirements

These plants love bright light, but I’m careful to protect them from direct sunlight. I water mine thoroughly when the soil surface feels dry, making sure not to let it sit in water.

5. Joseph’s Coat (Parrot Leaf)

A Living Masterpiece

Joseph’s Coat, with its stunning pink, green, and magenta leaves, is like having a rainbow in plant form. It’s become a conversation starter whenever friends visit!

Light Requirements

I’ve found the sweet spot for my Joseph’s Coat is bright, indirect light with a touch of afternoon shade.

Soil and Fertilizer Needs

Well-draining soil is a must for this beauty. I fertilize mine monthly during the growing season with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer.

Pruning for Optimal Growth

Regular pruning keeps my Joseph’s Coat bushy and vibrant. I pinch off the growing tips to encourage branching and maintain its compact shape.

6. Philodendron Pink Princess

A Touch of Royalty

The Philodendron Pink Princess truly lives up to its regal name. Its glossy green leaves with pink and white variegation add a touch of elegance to my living room.

Care Instructions

I keep my Pink Princess in bright, indirect light and water it when the top inch of soil is dry. High humidity is key to keeping those leaves looking their best.

Propagation Methods

I’ve successfully propagated my Pink Princess through stem cuttings in water. It’s a fun project to do with the kids, and we love watching the roots develop!

7. Begonia Pi ey

A Tricolored Dream

Last but not least, Begonia Pi ey has stolen my heart with its textured leaves featuring shades of green, black, and cream. It’s like having a piece of abstract art right in my home!

Growing Conditions

This beauty thrives in bright, indirect light. I keep mine in a well-draining potting mix and water when the top of the soil feels dry.

Display Ideas

I’ve placed my Begonia Pi ey on a plant stand near a north-facing window, where its unique coloration really pops against the white wall behind it.
