8 Steps to Create a Stunning Sunflower Circle in Your Garden

Written by Emily Belkoff

As a gardening enthusiast and mom, I’m always looking for fun projects to do with my family.

Last summer, we embarked on a magical adventure – creating a sunflower circle in our backyard.

It was a blast, and I can’t wait to share our experience with you!

Introduction to Creating a Sunflower Circle

The Homegrown Home Project

Have you ever dreamed of having your own secret garden hideaway? Well, let me tell you about our family’s sunflower circle project. It’s a delightful way to add a touch of whimsy to your garden while creating a cozy spot for relaxation and fun.

Step-by-Step Guide to Making a Sunflower Circle

Step 1: Choosing the Location

First things first, pick a sunny spot in your garden. Sunflowers love basking in the sun, so make sure you choose an area that gets plenty of direct sunlight throughout the day. We found the perfect spot right in the middle of our backyard!

Step 2: Marking Out the Circle

Now comes the fun part – marking out your circle. We kept it simple by using a stick and a string to draw the circumference. It felt like we were creating a magical fairy ring! Once we had our circle, we dug a furrow about the width of a spade all around it.

Step 3: Preparing the Soil

Time to get your hands dirty! We loosened up the soil in our furrow and filled it with rich, nutrient-packed compost. I’ll never forget the kids’ giggles as they helped me level it down – they thought it was just like playing in a sandbox!

Step 4: Sowing the Seeds

Here’s where you can get creative. We chose a few different varieties of sunflowers to add some diversity to our circle. Instead of starting them in seed trays, we decided to sow them directly into the soil. It was all hands on deck, with everyone in the family helping to plant the seeds.

Step 5: Protecting the Seedlings

Those tiny seedlings need protection! To keep pests at bay, we poured a little beer into a jar and placed it near the circle. It’s an old gardener’s trick that really works – and it gave us an excuse to enjoy a cold one while gardening!

Step 6: Supporting Young Plants

As our little sunflowers started to sprout, we gave them some extra love by supporting their fragile stems with bamboo sticks. It was like watching our babies take their first steps!

Step 7: Watching the Circle Grow

Now comes the hardest part – waiting! But trust me, it’s worth it. We checked on our sunflower circle every day, watching in awe as the plants grew taller and stronger. Seeing those tiny buds of flowers starting to pop open was pure magic.

Step 8: Enjoying Your Sunflower Circle

Before we knew it, our sunflower circle had taken shape, creating a lovely little hideout. As different varieties of sunflowers started opening, we couldn’t resist pulling up chairs for a lazy cup of coffee or setting up a cozy reading nook.

Benefits and Uses of a Sunflower Circle

Creating a Garden Hideout

Our sunflower circle quickly became one of our favorite outdoor spaces. It’s the perfect spot for a quiet moment alone or for gathering with family. The kids love pretending it’s their secret fort!

Attracting Wildlife

We’re not the only ones enjoying our sunny creation. Bees, butterflies, and other insects are drawn to the bright blooms. Even our cat, Maggie, loves lounging in this sunny spot in our garden.

Wrapping Up

Creating a sunflower circle has been one of the most rewarding gardening projects we’ve ever done. It’s more than just a beautiful addition to our garden – it’s a space filled with memories, laughter, and the simple joy of watching something grow.
