Best Winter Houseplants That Can Survive Through the Coldest Months (Indoor Plants)

Written by Emily Belkoff

When winter rolls around, I always get a little sad watching my outdoor garden go dormant. But I’ve found the perfect solution to beat those winter blues – bringing the garden indoors!

After years of trial and error, I’ve discovered these amazing houseplants that not only survive but actually thrive during the coldest months of the year.

7 Best Indoor Plants That Thrive in Winter

1. Monstera Deliciosa

You know those stunning plant photos all over Instagram? They’re probably showing off a Monstera Deliciosa, also called the Swiss Cheese Plant.

I got my first Monstera three years ago, and let me tell you – it’s been such a joy to watch those dramatic holes develop in its leaves.

This tropical beauty grows pretty quickly, about 1-2 feet each year, which means you’ll always have something green to admire. If you’ve got an older home with radiators putting out steam heat, this plant will be your new best friend – it absolutely loves that humid air!

2. Maidenhair Fern

Looking for something delicate and dreamy? The Maidenhair Fern might be your perfect match.

I keep mine in my bathroom where it gets lots of steam from hot showers, and it’s absolutely thriving.

Here’s the best part – you literally cannot overwater these beauties. Just keep the soil consistently moist with a self-watering pot, and you’re golden!

3. Snake Plant (Mother-in-Law’s Tongue)

Remember that snake plant your grandmother had? There’s a reason these plants have been popular forever.

With their tall, pointed leaves (hence the funny nickname “Mother-in-Law’s Tongue”), they’re practically indestructible.

I’ve got one that survived three weeks without water when I was on vacation, and it didn’t even flinch! Just water it once every four weeks, and it’ll reward you with gorgeous green leaves, some varieties even have pretty yellow or white stripes.

4. Christmas Cactus

Don’t let the word “cactus” fool you – this isn’t your typical desert plant!

My Christmas cactus puts on the most amazing show of pink and red blooms right when I need that pop of color most – in the middle of winter.

It’s super low-maintenance and doesn’t mind if the temperature in your house goes up and down (hello, temperamental heating system!). Even better, it does just fine in rooms that don’t get much natural light.

5. Chinese Evergreen (Aglaonema)

This is my go-to recommendation for anyone who claims they have a “black thumb.”

The Chinese Evergreen is like the golden retriever of houseplants – friendly, easy-going, and hard to mess up.

Just keep it away from cold drafts, don’t overwater it, and this tropical beauty will keep its bright green leaves looking fresh all winter long.

6. Jade Plant

Living in an apartment where you can’t control the heat? A Jade plant might be your perfect match.

Mine sits right by a window that occasionally gets left open on warmer winter days, and it couldn’t care less about the temperature swings.

These cute little tree-like succulents only need water every three weeks, making them perfect for busy plant parents or frequent travelers.

7. Pothos

If you’re just starting your plant parent journey, let me introduce you to the ultimate beginner-friendly plant – the Pothos.

These trailing beauties can grow impressively long vines with minimal effort on your part. I started with one small plant, and now I have them hanging in three different rooms!

Here’s a money-saving tip: when the vines get too long, just snip them off, stick them in water until they grow roots, and boom – free plants! I’ve gotten so many compliments when giving these as housewarming gifts.

I love how these hardy houseplants keep my home feeling alive and fresh during those long winter months when everything outside looks bare and brown. The best part is that they don’t need constant attention – perfect for busy moms like me who sometimes forget to water!
