10 Drought Tolerant Vines for a Worry Free Garden

Written by Emily Belkoff

When the summer heat hits and your garden starts to wilt, it’s time to rethink your plant choices.

As a busy mom and garden lover, I’ve discovered the secret to a thriving, low-maintenance outdoor space: drought-tolerant vines.

These hardy climbers have transformed my garden into a lush oasis without the constant need for watering.

1. Bougainvillea

My porch has never looked more vibrant since I added bougainvillea to the mix. This stunning vine is known for its vivid bracts that look like flowers. The best part? I only need to give it a deep soak once every 7-10 days. It’s like having a pop of color that doesn’t demand daily attention.

2. Trumpet Vine

When I first planted trumpet vine, I was skeptical about its drought tolerance. But boy, was I wrong! This spectacular flowering vine has become the envy of my neighborhood. With deep watering every 8-9 days, it continues to put on a show that rivals any fireworks display.

3. Cat’s Claw Vine

For those corners of my garden that I tend to forget, cat’s claw vine has been a lifesaver. It’s incredibly resilient, asking for water only every 10-12 days. I’ve found it to be one of the most drought-tolerant options in my green arsenal.

4. Star Jasmine

There’s nothing quite like stepping into the backyard and being greeted by the sweet scent of star jasmine. This fragrant vine has been a game-changer for my outdoor entertaining space. With watering every 7-8 days, it keeps the air filled with its intoxicating aroma.

5. Carolina Jasmine

While star jasmine seduces with scent, Carolina jasmine dazzles with its big, sunny flowers. It’s become my go-to for adding a cheerful touch to arbors and fences. A weekly watering is all it takes to keep this beauty combining charm with drought tolerance.

6. Silver Lace Vine

I’ve always been drawn to the elegance of white flowers, and silver lace vine delivers in spades. Its dark green leaves provide the perfect backdrop for delicate white blooms. Watering every 7-8 days keeps this stunning visual companion thriving in my garden.

7. Black-Eyed Susan Vine

Versatility is key in my gardening approach, and black-eyed Susan vine fits the bill perfectly. Whether draped over arbors or spilling out of containers, this adaptable vine stays perky for up to 9 days without water. It’s become my secret weapon for adding color to tricky spots.

8. Cape Honeysuckle

When I’m craving a burst of warm color, cape honeysuckle never disappoints. Its vibrant clusters of orange flowers bring a tropical feel to my drought-tolerant garden. A weekly watering is all it takes to keep this beauty blooming.

9. English Ivy

For year-round greenery, English ivy has become my go-to evergreen champion. It’s the perfect solution for bare walls or as ground cover in shady areas. The best part? It remains lush with just occasional watering, making it a true set-it-and-forget-it plant.

10. Climbing Aloe

Last but not least, climbing aloe has been a fascinating addition to my garden. This unique succulent climber has excellent water storage capabilities, often going nearly 2 weeks between waterings. It’s like having a living sculpture that thrives on neglect.
