Easy-Peasy Plants: 10 Best Indoor Plants for Low-Light & Easy Care!

Written by Emily Belkoff

Not everyone has a bright, sunny house – and that’s okay!

For years, I thought my dark apartment meant I couldn’t have plants. Then I found these amazing options that actually love shady spots.

Here are my top 10 picks for plants that thrive in dark corners.

1. Lucky Bamboo

My first venture into easy-care plants started with Lucky Bamboo, and I’ve never looked back.

Despite its name, it’s not actually bamboo at all – but don’t let that fool you into thinking it’s any less special.

In my entryway, I have several stems artfully arranged in a pretty glass vase filled with water, and visitors always comment on how elegant it looks.

The best part? It thrives in those tricky spots where natural light is scarce, making it perfect for my north-facing home office.

2. Spider Plant

If you’re looking for a plant that gives you more bang for your buck, the Spider Plant is your new best friend.

I started with one small plant three years ago, and now I have babies (called spiderettes) to share with all my friends.

These little plantlets dangle down like nature’s own decorations, creating the most amazing display in my kitchen window.

3. Golden Pothos

The Golden Pothos has become my go-to recommendation for anyone claiming they have a “black thumb.”

Those gorgeous heart-shaped leaves with splashes of gold brighten up even the dullest corner.

Just a heads-up though – I learned the hard way to keep this beauty out of reach of my curious cat, as it’s toxic to pets.

4. Snake Plant (Mother-in-law’s Tongue)

Talk about a statement piece! My Snake Plant has become the centerpiece of my living room, with its striking sword-like leaves reaching toward the ceiling.

The funny nickname “Mother-in-law’s Tongue” always gets a chuckle from visitors.

This plant is practically indestructible – I once forgot to water it for three weeks during a hectic holiday season, and it didn’t even flinch!

5. Staghorn Fern

Now here’s something different! My Staghorn Fern mounted on a wooden board has become quite the conversation starter.

It looks like a piece of living art on my wall, with those unique fronds resembling deer antlers.

This beauty prefers shady spots, making it perfect for those darker hallways or bathroom walls.

6. English Ivy

English Ivy brings such a cozy, cottage-core vibe to any space.

I have mine trailing along my bookshelf, and it gives my reading nook such a magical feel.

Just remember to keep it away from little hands and paws – it’s another one that’s toxic if ingested.

7. Cast Iron Plant

True to its name, this plant is as tough as they come!

I’ve had mine for five years now, surviving everything from forgotten waterings to accidental kicks from my toddler.

It’s the perfect plant for those super dark corners where nothing else seems to survive.

8. Peace Lily

My Peace Lily has become my most dramatic plant friend – in the best way possible!

When it needs water, it droops so obviously that even my kids can tell when it’s “thirsty.”

The white blooms are an extra special treat that brighten up my dining room throughout the year.

9. ZZ Plant

The ZZ Plant is what I like to call my “set it and forget it” plant.

Those glossy leaves always look like they’ve just been polished, even when I haven’t touched them in weeks.

It’s thriving in my windowless powder room, proving that natural light isn’t always necessary for a plant to flourish.

10. Anthurium

Last but certainly not least, my Anthurium brings a touch of tropical paradise to my home office.

Those vibrant blooms make me feel like I’m on vacation, even when I’m stuck inside during winter.

While it needs a bit more attention than the others on this list, the stunning flowers make it totally worth the extra effort.
