February Gardening: 7 Perennials that Will Make You the Envy of Your Neighborhood

Written by Emily Belkoff

Ever drive by a house with an amazing garden and think “Wow, how do they do that?”

Trust me, I used to be so jealous of those perfect-looking yards!

But I finally figured out the secret to having a beautiful garden without being stuck working in it all day.

Want to know my trick? It’s all about these seven super easy plants that keep coming back every year – and February is the perfect time to start planning them!

Start Planning These 7 Beautiful Plants in February

1. Shasta Daisies

I absolutely adore these cheerful flowers in my front yard. They remind me of the daisies I used to pick as a little girl!

These beauties stand tall at 2-3 feet and bring that classic white-petaled, yellow-centered look that never goes out of style.

What I love most about my Shasta daisies is that they’re totally low-drama – just give them some sun and well-drained soil, and they’ll reward you with blooms from late spring into early summer.

Pro tip from my garden journal: Don’t forget to snip off the dead flowers (I do this while having my morning coffee). It keeps them blooming longer!

2. Coreopsis

If sunshine could be a flower, it would definitely be coreopsis! These happy little yellow and orange blooms have become my go-to for brightening up boring corners of the garden.

My kids call them the “butterfly magnets” because they attract so many pollinators to our yard.

They’re perfect for busy moms like me because they basically take care of themselves – just plant them in a sunny spot with good drainage, and you’re all set.

3. Black-Eyed Susan

Let me tell you about my favorite flower for late-summer color! These gorgeous yellow flowers with dark centers are like having permanent sunshine in your garden.

My neighbors always ask about these showstoppers when they start blooming in late summer.

The best part? They’re practically indestructible (trust me, if I can’t kill them, nobody can!), and the bees and butterflies absolutely love them.

4. Daylilies

These were my grandmother’s favorite, and now I know why! They come in so many beautiful colors that it’s hard to choose just one.

I’ve planted mine along my garden path, and they’ve spread into the most gorgeous display.

The best thing about daylilies? They’re basically foolproof – perfect for those of us who don’t exactly have a perfect track record with plants!

5. Sedums

As a busy mom, these are my secret weapon for looking like I have my gardening life together! These succulent-like plants are practically impossible to kill.

They come in all sorts of cool colors and textures, and they look amazing in both garden beds and pots.

I especially love them because they laugh in the face of drought – perfect for those weeks when watering the garden falls to the bottom of the to-do list!

6. Lavender

Oh my goodness, let’s talk about lavender! This is my absolute favorite for making my garden smell like a fancy spa retreat.

The grey-green leaves look beautiful all year round, and when it blooms, it’s pure magic.

I’ve planted mine near our patio furniture, and the fragrance makes my morning coffee feel so much more luxurious.

7. Bearded Iris

These elegant flowers make me feel like I’m running a fancy English garden (even if the rest of my yard doesn’t quite match up!).

They come in the most amazing colors – from soft ballet-slipper pink to the deepest purple you can imagine.

I’ve lined my walkway with them, and every spring, they put on the most incredible show.

Wrapping Up

Here’s the real talk – as a mom juggling about a million things, I need plants that make me look good without demanding too much attention. These seven perennials have never let me down.

They come back year after year, looking better each time, and they’ve turned my garden into that yard that makes people slow down as they drive past.
