Growing Strawberries At Home Is Easy! Complete Growing Guide!

Written by Emily Belkoff

I’ve fallen head over heels for growing strawberries. There’s something magical about plucking sweet, juicy berries from your own backyard.

Today, I’m excited to share my complete guide to growing strawberries at home. Trust me, it’s easier than you might think!

Ideal Planting Time and Conditions

I’ve found that the best time to plant strawberries is 6-8 weeks before the last frost. These hardy plants actually love cold weather, so don’t be afraid to get them in the ground early. Just make sure they get 6-8 hours of full sun daily for optimal growth.

Strawberry Varieties and Growth Habits

Everbearing Strawberries

My favorite variety is the Seascape, an everbearing strawberry. It’s a true workhorse in the garden, producing fruit throughout the summer. In my zone 8B garden in East Texas, I’ve enjoyed harvesting these beauties from late May all the way through November!

Strawberry Multiplication Methods

Seed Propagation

While it’s possible to grow strawberries from seed, I don’t recommend it. The success rate is low, and it takes forever for the plants to establish.

Crown Division

Here’s where the magic happens. Strawberry mother plants naturally divide their crowns. I’ve successfully produced 5-6 new plants from just one crown. It’s like getting free plants!

Runners and Daughter Plants

Strawberries are generous plants. They send out runners with daughter plants along them. These little ones root and establish themselves, expanding your strawberry patch effortlessly.

Planting and Transplanting Strawberries

Proper Planting Technique

When planting, always keep the crown above ground level. I space my plants about 12 inches apart, but you can plant them closer if you’re short on space like me.

Tools for Planting

My go-to tool for planting strawberries is a hori hori knife. It’s perfect for digging and separating plants.

Transplanting Process

I replant my strawberries annually to keep them vigorous. Don’t worry about being too gentle – these plants actually like having their roots agitated a bit!

Soil Preparation and Amendments

Ideal Soil Conditions

Strawberries prefer well-draining soil that’s slightly alkaline (around pH 7.5). They also love soil rich in organic matter.

Recommended Soil Amendments

I use an organic fertilizer with a 4-6-4 ratio. Kelp meal is great for adding potash. But my secret weapon? Homemade compost! I mix in food scraps, chicken manure, coffee grounds, eggshells, and leaves.

Applying Amendments

I add about 1/2 inch to 1 inch of compost to my strawberry beds. Then I sprinkle on the organic fertilizer and kelp meal, mixing it lightly into the topsoil.

Care and Maintenance

Watering

Ensure your strawberry patch has proper drainage. These plants don’t like wet feet! After planting, give them a thorough watering to help them settle in.

Sun Protection

In hot summer regions like mine, I use a 50% shade cloth to protect my strawberries from intense heat.

Harvesting and Production

Expected Yield

With proper care, you can increase your strawberry plant numbers by 15 times annually. It’s incredible how quickly your patch can grow!

Harvesting Period

The harvesting period varies by variety and climate. In my zone 8B garden, my everbearing strawberries produce from May to November.

Advanced Strawberry Growing

Commercial Possibilities

For any budding entrepreneurs out there, strawberries could be your ticket. They’re easy to maintain, making them perfect for starting a strawberry farm or U-pick operation.

Greenhouse Growing

Consider greenhouse growing for an extended season or better climate control. It’s a great way to ensure a steady strawberry supply.

Growing strawberries at home has been one of the most rewarding experiences in my gardening journey. With these tips, you’ll be enjoying homegrown strawberries in no time.
