HOT PICKS! 10 BEST Flowers & Vegetables to Plant in JULY!

Written by Emily Belkoff

July has always been one of my favorite months in the garden.

With my three kids running through sprinklers, I love spending early mornings planting seeds that will bring both beauty and bounty to our family garden.

Here are my tried-and-true favorites for July planting!

Best Flowers to Plant in July

5 Stunning Summer Bloomers

1. Delphiniums

I absolutely adore these cottage garden classics! They’ve become my go-to for adding dramatic height to my garden.

The tall spikes come in the most gorgeous shades of blue, purple, pink, and white.

Just remember to give them plenty of support – I learned that lesson the hard way after a summer storm knocked mine over last year!

2. Forget-Me-Nots

These sweet little flowers hold a special place in my heart since my daughter helped scatter their seeds throughout our garden borders.

They create the most enchanting carpet of blue blooms, perfect for filling empty spaces between larger plants.

3. Pansies

Starting these in July has become our family tradition.

My kids love choosing which color combinations to plant for our spring display.

They’re like little faces smiling up at us when they bloom!

4. Wallflowers

These are my secret weapon for early spring color.

Plant them now, and they’ll reward you with stunning orange and yellow blooms when winter finally releases its grip.

5. Foxgloves

These majestic beauties have become the backdrop of our cottage-style garden.

The bees absolutely love them, and they create the perfect fairytale setting for outdoor tea parties with my little ones.

5 Kitchen Garden Favorites

1. Lettuce

We keep a continuous supply of fresh salad greens going all summer long.

My kids actually eat their greens when they help grow them!

2. Carrots

These autumn treasures are worth the wait.

I’ve found sowing them directly in well-prepared soil works best, and my little ones love pulling up their own carrots.

3. Turnips

This two-for-one vegetable has become a surprising family favorite.

We use both the sweet roots and nutritious greens in our meals.

4. Radishes

These quick growers are perfect for impatient gardeners like my youngest.

From seed to harvest in just a few weeks, they’re our go-to for instant gardening gratification.

5. Winter Cabbage

While not the most glamorous vegetable, these hardy plants are our garden’s winter champions.

Just remember to protect them from cabbage whites – I use netting after losing an entire crop one year!

July Planting Success Tips

Summer Growing Secrets

I’ve learned to plant early in the morning or late evening to avoid the worst of the heat.

Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged.

A layer of mulch helps retain moisture and keeps roots cool during the hottest days.

I hope these suggestions help make your July garden as productive and joy-filled as mine has become.
