Ever feel like nothing will grow in certain spots of your yard? That was totally me last year.
Then my neighbor told me about ground covers, and oh my, what a difference they make!
These plants are like magic – they spread out and fill in all those problem spots on their own!
Today I’m sharing my favorite ones that turned my sad yard into something I’m actually proud of.
1. Trailing Periwinkle (Vinca Minor)
You guys, I can’t say enough good things about periwinkle! The pretty purple-blue flowers make me smile every time I look out my kitchen window.
I first planted it around our big maple tree where nothing else would grow, and it’s been a total game-changer.
One word of warning though – this plant loves to spread. I learned that lesson the hard way when it tried taking over my flower bed! Just keep an eye on it and trim it back if needed.
It’s super easy to grow in both sunny and shady spots, which makes it perfect for those tricky areas under trees or along fences.
2. Dragon’s Blood Sedum
If you’re looking for drama in your garden, Dragon’s Blood Sedum is your new best friend.
The deep red color gets more intense with sun exposure, which is just magical to watch throughout the season.
I have this growing along my front walkway, and let me tell you, the neighbors can’t stop asking about it! It grows about 8 inches tall and spreads like a champ.
The best part? It’s basically impossible to kill. It handles dry spells like a pro and doesn’t mind when temperatures go crazy.
3. Creeping Phlox
Oh my goodness, if you want a spring show-stopper, creeping phlox is it!
This North American native creates the most beautiful carpet of pink, purple, red, or white flowers that’ll make your heart skip a beat.
I planted mine on a tough slope in our backyard that used to be a nightmare to mow. Now it’s the prettiest spot in our garden!
It needs good drainage and some sun to really thrive, but once it’s happy, it’s the gift that keeps on giving.
4. Golden Creeping Jenny
Let’s talk about my latest garden crush – Golden Creeping Jenny!
The bright golden leaves are like little coins of sunshine scattered across the ground.
I use it around my kids’ splash pad area because it actually loves moisture and doesn’t mind a bit of shade.
It’s become my go-to solution for those awkward spots under shrubs where nothing else seems happy.
5. English Ivy
English Ivy has been my secret weapon for problem areas in our yard.
Its glossy green leaves create such a lush look, and it’s practically bulletproof.
I’ve got it growing up our ugly chain-link fence, and it’s transformed it into a gorgeous green wall.
Just a heads up – it can be quite vigorous, so maybe don’t plant it right next to your prized roses!
6. Creeping Thyme
If you’ve got kids or pets who love running through the yard, creeping thyme is your friend.
Not only can it handle being stepped on, but it releases the most wonderful smell when crushed.
I planted it between our patio pavers, and now the whole area looks like something from a fairy garden.
The leaves turn this gorgeous crimson color in summer, and bonus – the deer leave it alone!
7. Sweet Woodruff
Sweet Woodruff has totally saved my shady side yard where grass refused to grow.
Its bright green leaves and dainty white flowers in spring make it look like a woodland garden straight out of a storybook.
Here’s a fun fact – the dried leaves smell like vanilla and are traditionally used to make May wine (though I just enjoy the fragrance in my garden!).
It’s perfect for those spots where other plants struggle, and it’s amazing at keeping weeds away.
