Want to make your backyard look amazing this spring? I’ve found that climbing vines are the easiest way to do it!
These pretty plants will cover up ugly fences and create gorgeous flower-covered archways that’ll make your outdoor space look straight out of a fairy tale.
7 Spring Blooming Perennial Vines
1. Wisteria
I’ll never forget the first time I saw wisteria in bloom – it literally took my breath away!
These stunning vines produce cascading clusters of purple, pink, or white flowers that smell absolutely heavenly.
While it does take a few years to really get going, trust me – it’s worth the wait.
I’ve trained mine over our back patio pergola, and every spring it creates the most magical ceiling of flowers you can imagine.
2. Clematis
If you’re new to gardening like I was, clematis is your new best friend.
These beauties produce the most gorgeous oversized flowers in pretty much every color you can think of – pink, purple, red, and the most stunning shades of blue.
I started with one along our mailbox post, and now I have them climbing up trellises all over our yard because they’re just so easy to grow!
3. Honeysuckle
Oh my goodness, if you could bottle up the smell of spring, it would be honeysuckle.
My kids absolutely love watching the yellow and orange blooms appear each year, and the sweet fragrance makes working in the garden feel like you’re at a spa.
We’ve got ours growing along our back fence, and it’s become the perfect backdrop for our family photos.
4. Trumpet Creeper
Talk about a showstopper! If you’re looking for something bold and dramatic, trumpet creeper is your vine.
The flowers look exactly like their name suggests – bright orange, red, or yellow trumpets that seem to announce spring’s arrival.
I planted mine along our garage wall, and within two seasons, it created the most amazing natural privacy screen.
5. Passion Flower
When my neighbors first saw my passion flowers blooming, they thought I was growing some exotic tropical plant!
These vines produce the most incredible, almost alien-looking flowers that become an instant conversation starter.
Even though they look fancy, they’re surprisingly easy to care for – perfect for busy moms like me who don’t have time for high-maintenance plants.
6. Jasmine
If you love scented candles and perfume, you need jasmine in your garden.
The delicate white or yellow flowers might look dainty, but boy do they pack a fragrant punch!
I planted mine near our patio seating area, and now every spring evening feels like we’re dining at a fancy restaurant.
7. Virginia Creeper
This is what I call my “set it and forget it” vine!
While it starts spring with subtle greenish-white flowers, the real magic happens in fall when the leaves turn a spectacular bright red.
I actually discovered this vine by accident when it started growing up our shed, and now it’s one of my favorite low-maintenance plants that adds interest to our garden year-round.
