Say ‘NO’ to Deer: Top 7 Shrubs for a Perfect, Deer-Free Landscape Deer Resistant Plants

Written by Emily Belkoff

After watching my prized garden become an all-you-can-eat buffet for local deer last season, I knew something had to change.

Like many fellow gardeners, I’ve spent countless hours researching and testing deer-resistant plants.

Today, I’m excited to share my favorite deer-resistant shrubs that have transformed my garden from a deer diner into a beautiful, protected sanctuary.

1. Boxwood (Buxus)

My love affair with boxwoods started when I desperately needed a year-round privacy solution that deer wouldn’t devour.

These broadleaf evergreens have become the backbone of my garden design, creating stunning green barriers that stay lush even during winter.

What really sold me was discovering they contain natural deer-deterring alkaloids – finally, a plant that does the hard work for me!

All they need is one annual pruning session, and they’re good to go for the rest of the year.

2. Butterfly Bush

If you’re anything like me, you want a garden that’s both deer-resistant and magical. Enter the butterfly bush!

I planted mine three years ago, and now I get to enjoy vibrant blooms from summer until the first frost, plus the bonus of countless butterfly visitors.

Despite growing quite tall, my butterfly bush only needs one yearly trim to keep it looking fabulous and blooming profusely.

3. Juniper (Cupressaceae)

The strong, resinous scent of juniper might remind you of gin, but it reminds deer to stay far away!

I’ve found that deer’s sensitive noses can’t handle juniper’s powerful aroma, making it a perfect natural barrier.

My junipers have proven to be incredibly low-maintenance, only requiring occasional pruning to keep them from getting too wild.

4. Russian Sage

On hot summer days, nothing beats the cooling visual effect of Russian sage’s silvery-gray foliage and delicate blue flowers.

I was thrilled to discover this plant is both drought-tolerant and completely ignored by deer – talk about a win-win!

While it does spread through underground runners, I’ve found this actually helps create a beautiful, naturalized look with minimal effort on my part.

5. Andromeda (Pieris Japonica)

The day I discovered Andromeda was a game-changer for my spring garden design.

These dense evergreen shrubs burst into the most spectacular early spring blooms, filling the air with a potent fragrance that keeps deer at bay.

I simply give them an occasional trim to maintain their shape, and they reward me with years of reliable performance.

6. Shrub Roses

Don’t let their delicate beauty fool you – these thorny warriors are some of my most effective deer deterrents!

I’ve planted several varieties throughout my garden, creating a thorny but beautiful barrier that deer won’t dare to cross.

The key to success with my shrub roses has been early spring pruning, which promotes better air circulation and ensures healthier blooms.

7. Bluebeard (Caryopterus/Blue Mist Shrub)

When August rolls around and most other shrubs have finished their show, my Bluebeard takes center stage.

This late-summer stunner not only repels deer with its intense fragrance but also attracts beneficial pollinators to my garden.

I’ve found that cutting it back by half in early spring and removing any dead growth keeps it looking pristine and performing its best.
