These 10 Low Light Wonders Will Make Your Apartment BREATHE Better!

Written by Emily Belkoff

Tired of stuffy apartment air? I was too, until I started growing these amazing low-light plants!

They’ve made such a big difference in my home, thriving in even the darkest spots while cleaning our air.

Here are my top 10 favorite plants that will make your apartment feel fresher and healthier!

1. Rex Begonia

Key Features

I fell in love with my Rex Begonia at first sight. Those stunning leaves look like they’ve been hand-painted by an artist!

It’s become the centerpiece of my living room, turning an ordinary corner into something extraordinary.

Care Requirements

This plant has been such an easy companion in my apartment life.

It thrives with just basic care – moderate light, regular watering, and occasional feeding.

I’ve found it to be incredibly forgiving when I sometimes forget to water it (life with kids, am I right?).

2. Moth Orchid

Key Features

My Moth Orchid brings such elegant vibes to my home office space.

Those butterfly-like blooms never fail to make me smile during long work days.

The best part? The flowers last for months!

Care Requirements

I keep mine in a cozy corner away from direct sunlight.

A little humidity from a small humidifier keeps it happy.

Even as a complete beginner, I managed to keep it thriving – trust me, if I can do it, anyone can!

3. Jade Plant

Key Features

My jade plant started as a tiny cutting from my grandmother’s plant.

Now it’s become this gorgeous, tree-like centerpiece that makes me think of her every day.

I’ve even started shaping it like a bonsai – it’s become my living piece of art!

Care Requirements

I learned the hard way that jade plants tell you exactly what they need.

When the leaves turned grayish, I moved it closer to my window, and wow – what a difference!

Now those plump, slightly red-tinted leaves tell me it’s thriving in its sunny spot.

4. Spider Plant

Key Features

This plant gives me all the cozy 70s vibes I crave in my modern apartment.

I’ve placed mine in a vintage macramé hanger, and it’s become quite the conversation starter!

Those cascading baby plants make it look like I’m some sort of plant genius (spoiler alert: I’m not!).

Care Requirements

You guys, this is literally the most forgiving plant I own.

It doesn’t mind my artificial lighting at all, and somehow survives even when I forget to water it.

I’ve even propagated babies for friends – just snip and pop them in water!

5. Fiddle Leaf Fig

Key Features

When I first brought home my fiddle leaf fig, I felt like I’d joined some secret plant-parent club.

Those large, violin-shaped leaves make such a bold statement in my living room.

Care Requirements

Here’s my little secret: I water it with old aquarium water from my son’s fish tank.

The plants absolutely love those extra nutrients, and it’s a great way to recycle water!

Keep the soil just moist enough – think of a well-wrung sponge.

6. English Ivy (Helix Hedera)

Key Features

My English ivy has turned my plain bookshelf into something straight out of a fairy tale.

I chose a variety with white-splashed leaves that brightens up my reading nook.

The way it grows and trails makes every corner look intentionally styled.

Care Requirements

This plant has adapted beautifully to my apartment’s varying conditions.

I love how I can train it to grow wherever I want – it’s like having a living decoration that I can sculpt!

7. Christmas Cactus

Key Features

Don’t let the name fool you – my Christmas cactus brings joy all year round!

It’s become my favorite bathroom plant, loving all that shower steam.

Those winter blooms are like nature’s holiday decorations, appearing just when everything else looks dull.

Care Requirements

I keep mine near my kitchen sink where it gets both humidity and indirect light.

Unlike desert cacti, this beauty thrives in more humid conditions.

8. Bird’s Nest Fern

Key Features

After killing several other ferns (oops!), this one finally made me feel like a successful plant parent.

Those crisp, wavy fronds add such a tropical vibe to my space.

Care Requirements

Average humidity and gentle light are all it needs to thrive.

I learned that good air circulation around the roots is key – no heavy, dense potting soil here!

9. Air Plants (Tillandsia)

Key Features

These little wonders are my absolute favorite for creative decorating.

I’ve displayed mine in everything from vintage teacups to hanging glass globes.

They look like they’re floating in air – such a cool effect!

Care Requirements

A weekly misting is all these magical plants need.

I keep them away from direct sun but in bright, filtered light.

10. ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas Zamiifolia)

Key Features

This African beauty is my go-to recommendation for anyone claiming they can’t keep plants alive.

It’s perfect for those forgotten corners where nothing else seems to work.

I have one thriving on my bookshelf where it adds life without demanding attention.

Care Requirements

The ZZ plant actually prefers to dry out between waterings.

It’s become my most reliable plant friend, thriving on neglect more than attention!
