Top 10 Fall-Blooming Shrubs & Small Trees for Stunning Gardens!

Written by Emily Belkoff

I used to get so bummed watching my garden fade away each fall. Then I found these plants that actually bloom in autumn!

Now my yard looks amazing even when the weather gets cool.

Here are the trees and shrubs that completely changed my fall garden game.

1. Crepe Myrtle

Bloom Characteristics

I fell in love with Crepe Myrtles the moment I planted one near our front porch. The ruffled blooms in pink, red, lavender, and white create the most spectacular summer show you can imagine.

Notable Features

The real magic happens in fall when the leaves transform into a fiery display of reds, oranges, and yellows. My kids love peeling off bits of the unique bark (with permission, of course!). I’ve found it’s perfect for adding height to our garden borders, and it handles our warm climate like a champ.

2. Witch Hazel

Key Features

On chilly fall mornings, nothing beats stepping outside to see those quirky, spidery flowers in bright yellow, orange, or red. The sweet fragrance always reminds me of my grandmother’s garden.

Growing Benefits

Trust me, as a busy mom, I appreciate how low-maintenance this shrub is. I’ve never had issues with pests, and it looks stunning against our fence line when everything else has stopped blooming.

3. Camellia Sasanqua

Distinctive Qualities

My favorite thing about our Camellia is how it seems to know exactly when we need a pick-me-up. Just as summer flowers start fading, it bursts into bloom with the most elegant white, pink, and red flowers.

4. Fragrant Olive

Notable Characteristics

The heavenly apricot scent from our Fragrant Olive makes checking the mail a delightful experience. I planted it right by our walkway, and its bright tangerine blooms against those glossy green leaves never fail to impress the neighbors.

Versatile Uses

After experimenting with different spots, I’ve found it works beautifully as both a privacy screen and in containers. We even have a smaller one in a pot on our patio where we can enjoy its fragrance during evening family dinners.

5. Franklin Tree

Special Features

I feel like I’m part of a special club having this rare beauty in my garden. The white flowers remind me of camellias, and those yellow stamens add such drama to our fall landscape.

Historical Significance

Every time I look at our Franklin Tree, I think about its fascinating story – extinct in the wild but thriving in gardens like ours. I baby this one a bit more than my other plants, making sure the soil drainage is perfect.

6. Rose of Sharon

Bloom Characteristics

This was my first “big girl” shrub when we moved into our home. Those large hibiscus-like blooms in blue, red, pink, and white keep our garden looking alive well into fall when everything else starts to fade.

Foliage Features

The leaves start pale yellow-green and deepen to medium green as the season progresses. My daughter calls it our “rainbow bush” because of how many flower colors it produces.

7. Seven Sons Flower

Plant Features

This Chinese native has become a family favorite since we planted it last year. The creamy white flower clusters are gorgeous, but what really sold me was watching butterflies and hummingbirds flock to it in late summer.

The heart-shaped leaves and peeling bark add such wonderful texture to our garden. As a busy mom, I appreciate that it’s disease resistant – one less thing to worry about!

8. Forsythia

Key Characteristics

Nothing says “wake up, garden!” quite like Forsythia’s cheerful yellow blooms. I’ve used these hardy shrubs to create a natural fence line that literally glows in early spring.

The arching branches look beautiful year-round, and I love how adaptable these shrubs are. They’ve survived my less-than-perfect gardening moments without complaint.

9. Rosebud Cherry

Notable Features

This compact tree was perfect for our smaller garden space. The pink blossoms looking like tiny rosebuds against dark branches create the most romantic spring display.

When fall arrives, the orange-red foliage puts on another spectacular show. My kids love watching bees and butterflies visit the blossoms – it’s become our own little nature classroom.

10. Burning Bush

Distinctive Features

I saved this showstopper for last because it’s truly the grand finale of our fall garden. The fiery red foliage literally stops traffic on our street.

Growing Benefits

As someone who occasionally forgets to water, I appreciate how forgiving this shrub is. It thrives in various conditions and creates the most dramatic fall display with practically zero effort on my part.

The dark green summer leaves and interesting corky branches mean it looks fantastic all year long. We’ve planted several as a border, and they’ve transformed our garden into an autumn wonderland.
