Top 10 Fastest Seeds to Plant NOW for Summer WOW! (Fast Growing Flowers for Garden)

Written by Emily Belkoff

Is everyone’s garden bursting with flowers while yours is still looking…well, kinda bare? Story of my life!

After many years of playing catch-up in my garden, I’ve found these amazing flowers that grow crazy fast and look stunning.

1. Sunflowers

Nothing says summer quite like towering sunflowers reaching toward the sky. I plant these cheerful giants every year with my kids, and they’re always amazed at how quickly they grow.

The seeds wake up in just 10 days, and before you know it, you’ll have stunning blooms in about 10 weeks.

Plant them in rich, moist soil after the last spring frost, spacing them 2 feet apart. Just remember to stake those tall stems – I learned that lesson the hard way after a windy day!

2. Zinnias

These are my go-to flowers when I’m running behind schedule. Zinnias are incredibly forgiving and perfect for late starters.

They germinate in just 5 days when soil temperatures are above 70°F, and you’ll see gorgeous blooms in about 8 weeks.

I love how they attract butterflies and birds to my garden, creating a living paradise that my whole family enjoys.

3. Spider Flower

These unique beauties have become my secret weapon for filling bare fence lines and back borders.

They sprout within 1-2 weeks and reach impressive heights of 4-5 feet. The whiskery blooms appear in about 70-80 days.

The best part? They self-seed prolifically, meaning less work for me next year!

4. Marigolds

In my garden, marigolds are the ultimate multitaskers. Their spicy scent and vibrant colors brighten any space.

I love planting them near my tomatoes – they’re natural pest deterrents! Within 8 weeks, you’ll have beautiful blooms.

These tough little flowers are perfect for busy gardeners like me. They keep blooming until frost with minimal maintenance.

5. Nasturtiums

Last summer, I discovered these edible gems, and they’ve become a family favorite. My kids love sprinkling the peppery flowers on salads.

For best results, I soak the seeds overnight – a little trick that speeds up germination to just one week.

They’re surprisingly low-maintenance and actually bloom better in less fertile soil. Talk about a gardener’s dream!

6. Cosmos (Mexican Aster)

These delicate-looking flowers are actually tough as nails. I’ve watched them thrive through scorching summer days when other plants struggled.

They take 8-14 weeks to bloom, but their feathery foliage looks beautiful even before flowering.

Once established, they practically take care of themselves. I barely water mine – they do just fine with natural rainfall.

7. Morning Glory

These rapid climbers are perfect for creating privacy screens or covering unsightly fences. My bare trellis transformed into a flowering masterpiece in just weeks!

Here’s a pro tip I learned: soak or nick the seeds before planting to speed up germination.

Just be mindful where you plant them – they can be vigorous self-seeders, and the seeds are toxic to pets.

8. Blanket Flower (Gaillardia)

Living in a hot climate, these heat-loving flowers have become my garden’s MVPs (Most Valuable Plants).

They take about 3 months to bloom, but once they start, the red, orange, and yellow flowers keep coming.

I’ve found they’re practically indestructible in my sandy soil, and the pollinators absolutely adore them.

9. Four O’Clocks (Marvel of Peru)

These magical flowers have become my evening garden stars. They open late afternoon, just when I’m winding down with my evening tea.

From seed to bloom takes about 12 weeks, but the wait is worth it for their enchanting evening display.

The hummingbirds and moths that visit make the garden come alive at dusk.

10. Globe Amaranth

These charming pincushion-like flowers are my go-to for reliable summer color. They’re incredibly heat-tolerant and perfect for dry spells.

I start mine when soil temperatures reach 65°F, and in about 12 weeks, they reward me with endless blooms.

They’re fantastic in bouquets too – I dry them for winter arrangements when I’m missing my summer garden.
