Top 8 Best Plants for Drought Tolerant Gardens

Written by Emily Belkoff

Living in an area where rain is as rare as finding matching socks in the laundry basket can make gardening feel impossible.

After years of watching my plants wither away despite constant watering, I finally discovered these amazing drought-resistant plants that have transformed my garden into a thriving oasis – all while saving water and money!

Best Drought-Tolerant Plant Selections

1. Aloe

I absolutely love having aloe plants in my garden! They’re like the superheroes of the succulent world.

There are hundreds of different types to choose from, and while most people know about regular aloe vera, I’ve fallen in love with varieties like jewel aloe and tiger aloe.

These hardy plants come in beautiful shades from soft gray to bright green, and some even have gorgeous striped patterns that add instant personality to any garden space.

2. Artichoke

Would you believe that those artichokes we buy at the grocery store can become stunning garden plants? It’s true!

These impressive plants grow tall and proud, reaching anywhere from 3 to 6 feet high, with unique spiky leaves in lovely green or gray-green shades.

The most magical part? If you don’t harvest the artichokes, they transform into the most beautiful purple flowers I’ve ever seen in my garden.

3. Beardtongue

When I first heard the name “beardtongue,” I’ll admit I giggled. But these North American natives have become one of my favorite garden additions.

They’re incredible at attracting hummingbirds and bees, which my kids absolutely love watching from our patio.

The tube-shaped flowers grow in cute little clusters, and once they’re settled in, they practically take care of themselves – perfect for busy moms like me!

4. Geranium

If you’re looking for a plant that’s practically impossible to kill, geraniums are your new best friend.

These sweet little plants start blooming in late spring, and some newer varieties, like my beloved Rozanne, keep those beautiful flowers coming until the first frost.

The best part? They can live for decades and are super easy to multiply by taking cuttings – I’ve started countless new plants from my original one to share with friends!

5. Fountain Grass

Fountain grass has been a total game-changer in my garden’s design. It’s like having a natural fountain without the maintenance!

The grass forms these gorgeous clumps with arching leaves in the most beautiful purplish-red color, growing about 3 feet tall.

During summer, it puts on an extra show with lovely flower spikes that dance in the breeze above the leaves.

6. Lavender

Oh my goodness, let me tell you about lavender – it’s like having a little piece of Provence in your backyard!

The purple-blue flower spikes aren’t just pretty; they fill the whole garden with the most amazing calming scent. I love cutting some to place in dresser drawers or make DIY sachets.

Some varieties stay small and compact, while others grow into gorgeous shrubs that make perfect focal points in the garden.

7. Pride of Madeira

This plant is what I call my “show-off” in the garden because it’s absolutely spectacular.

It starts as a modest rosette of gray-green leaves in its first year, but just wait until year two – that’s when the magic happens with tall, dramatic flower spikes that make everyone stop and stare.

Growing between 5-6 feet tall and 6-10 feet wide, it’s perfect for filling those tricky empty spaces in your garden.

8. New Zealand Tea Tree

Last but definitely not least, this lovely shrub has become my secret weapon for year-round interest in the garden.

Its small, sharp leaves stay green all year and release the most wonderful fragrance when you brush past them.

The early summer brings a gorgeous display of white, pink, or red flowers that the bees absolutely adore – it’s like having your own little pollinator party!

Wrapping Up

By incorporating these drought-tolerant plants into my garden, I’ve created a beautiful, low-maintenance space that thrives even during the hottest, driest months.

Not only do these plants save me time and money on watering, but they’ve also given me more time to actually enjoy my garden instead of constantly maintaining it. Now that’s what I call a win-win!
