3 Color Schemes for Creating an Ambient Garden

Written by Emily Belkoff

After spending countless hours scrolling through Pinterest and feeling overwhelmed by all the gorgeous garden photos, I finally cracked the code to creating a beautiful outdoor space. The secret?

It’s all about choosing the right color scheme! Let me share my favorite combinations that transformed my once-chaotic garden into a stunning retreat.

1. Cheerful and Inviting Pastels

You know that feeling when you spot the first blooms of spring? That’s exactly what a pastel garden brings to your space year-round!

Characteristics

I learned the hard way that throwing together random colors can make your garden look like a crazy quilt. But with pastels, it’s almost impossible to go wrong! These soft hues flow together like watercolors, creating a gentle, welcoming vibe that’s perfect for your front yard.

My neighbors always ask how I keep my garden looking so “put together,” and honestly, it’s all about sticking to those dreamy, muted tones.

Plant Examples

In my garden, I’ve fallen head over heels for pink and lavender foxgloves. They’re like nature’s exclamation points, adding height and drama without screaming for attention.

Light pink peonies are another favorite of mine – they’re like fluffy clouds of happiness when they bloom!

To keep things from looking too “baby shower,” I’ve sprinkled in some dark green shrubs and deep purple perennials. Trust me, these darker elements make all the difference between “sweet” and “sophisticated.”

Color Tips

Here’s a little secret I discovered: if you want your garden to feel like a peaceful retreat, lean heavily into blues and purples. They’re like a visual lullaby!

When I added some yellows and pinks to my pastel palette, it definitely perked things up – perfect for those morning coffee moments in the garden.

Just remember to pop in one or two deeply colored plants to prevent that washed-out look we all dread.

2. Cool and Serene

When my kids are driving me crazy, this is the garden style I dream about!

Characteristics

Picture those perfect summer days with white puffy clouds floating by – that’s the feeling this color scheme creates.

This style requires some self-control at the garden center (believe me, I know how hard that is!), but the results are worth it.

The key is keeping things simple and clean – think sophisticated beach house rather than tropical paradise.

Plant Examples

My absolute favorites are the white and blue flowering hydrangeas. They’re like great big snowballs of color that last all summer!

I’ve paired them with medium blue Veronica and pale purple-blue catmint (which, by the way, my cats absolutely adore).

White roses add that classic touch, while evergreen foliage keeps things looking fresh even when nothing’s blooming.

Color Tips

Look for the clearest blues you can find – nothing muddy or grayish.

When it comes to white flowers, go for the brightest, cleanest white possible. Trust me, it makes a difference!

Don’t skimp on the evergreens – they’re like the little black dress of the garden world, making everything else look better.

3. Dramatic and Energizing

This is what I like to call my “coffee without cream” garden style – bold, energizing, and definitely not subtle!

Characteristics

If you’re tired of having the most boring yard on the block, this color scheme is your answer.

These jewel tones are like garden fireworks, especially amazing in late summer when everything else starts looking tired.

I love how this style really comes alive during fall, playing off the changing colors of the trees.

Color Tips

Remember that color wheel from art class? It’s finally coming in handy! Pair colors from opposite sides for maximum drama.

Try orange flowers with blue ones (my personal favorite), or yellow blooms next to violet ones.

When fall rolls around, these bold colors look amazing with the natural red, orange, and amber leaves on the trees.

I’ve found that using colors that are close to each other on the wheel, but not exactly the same, creates this gorgeous, rich look that makes my garden pop.

Wrapping Up

Remember, gardening isn’t about following strict rules – it’s about creating a space that makes you happy! These color schemes are just starting points. Feel free to adjust them until they feel just right for your space. After all, the best garden is one that makes you smile every time you look out your window!
