Cane begonias are the upright superstars of the begonia world, growing tall and proud on bamboo-like stems. They’re basically the supermodels of the plant world!
Dragon Wing begonias are like the simplified cousins of Angel Wings, with their solid dark green leaves. They’re beautiful in their own right, but today we’re focusing on those stunning Angel Wings that captured my heart.
Angel Wing Varieties
My absolute favorite is the White Ice Begonia. The leaves look like they’ve been sprinkled with fairy dust, showing off gorgeous white spots against deep green leaves.
I’m also head over heels for the Arabia Sunset variety. Those blood-red undersides and fuzzy leaves give it such personality! The spots are more subtle and pink-toned, but that just adds to its charm.
Light Requirements

These beauties are total divas when it comes to light – they want it bright but not too bright! Trust me, I learned this the hard way after scorching a few leaves.
Think of them as the Goldilocks of the plant world – they need everything just right. Too much direct sun will burn those delicate leaves, while too little light leads to leggy, stretched-out growth.
Successful Growing Locations
I’ve had amazing success keeping mine under grow lights in my plant cabinet. Even my office shelf warriors are thriving with just 5-6 hours of artificial light!

These tropical beauties prefer temperatures between 65-75°F – basically, if you’re comfortable, they probably are too! Just keep them away from those chilly drafts near windows.
Humidity Needs
Let me tell you – these plants LOVE humidity! In my experience, they absolutely thrive in higher humidity environments around 60-80%.
Living in a dry climate? No worries! Try grouping plants together or using a small humidifier. My plants have been so much happier since I started paying attention to humidity.
Fertilization & Growing Medium
Fertilizer Schedule
I feed my begonias with every watering using a diluted fertilizer. It’s like giving them a little smoothie every time they’re thirsty!
If you’re hoping for flowers (though honestly, those leaves are showstoppers enough), try a fertilizer high in potassium during spring. That’s their favorite time to bloom!
Growing Medium Options
After lots of trial and error, I’ve found these plants do amazingly well in semi-hydro setups. It’s been a game-changer for this chronic underwaterer!
If you’re sticking with soil, choose something that retains moisture but still drains well. These plants actually prefer being a bit root-bound, so don’t rush to repot them.

Want more begonias? (Who doesn’t?) Taking stem cuttings is super easy! I’ve had great success rooting them in water or sphagnum moss.
Each time you take a cutting, you’re actually doing your plant a favor – it encourages bushier growth. It’s like giving your plant a haircut that makes it grow back fuller!
Safety Considerations
One important note – these beauties are toxic to pets and people if ingested. I keep mine up high away from curious paws and tiny hands.
