How to Plant and Grow Beautiful Lily of the Valley

Written by Emily Belkoff

Last spring, while cleaning up my messy garden after a long winter, I stumbled upon the sweetest surprise – tiny white Lily of the Valley blooms hiding under our old maple tree!

Since that magical morning, I’ve been hooked on growing these amazing flowers.

Today, I’ll show you just how easy it is to start your own patch!

Common Names

You might know these darlings as Lily of the Valley, but they actually go by several charming names. My Swiss neighbor calls them “Maya Easly” (May risers), which I think is just adorable!

I love calling them Snow Whites in my garden because of their pure white blooms. They’re also known as Mary’s tears or Ladies tears in religious traditions.

Basic Plant Overview

Let me tell you about what these sweethearts need to thrive in your garden! As someone who’s grown them for years, I can tell you they’re basically woodland celebrities.

These pretty little things absolutely love hanging out in shady spots. Trust me on this one – they’re perfect for those tricky areas under trees where nothing else seems to grow!

I’ve had the best success planting mine under our old maple tree, where they get just enough filtered sunlight to make them happy. Just avoid those sunny south-facing spots – they’ll get too hot and cranky there!

Important Growing Considerations

Toxicity Warning

Now, I need to have a serious mommy-to-mommy chat with you about these beauties. As gorgeous as they are, every part of these plants is toxic – and I mean every single bit!

When I’m working with my Lily of the Valley, I always wear my gardening gloves (the cute polka-dotted ones my kids got me for Mother’s Day). If I’m in a hurry and forget my gloves, I make sure to wash my hands really well afterward.

The silver lining? Those pesky garden pests leave these flowers completely alone! It’s like having a naturally protected garden – how amazing is that?

Spreading Habits

Let me tell you something funny – these little plants are total social butterflies! They love to spread and make friends with every inch of your garden.

My first patch started as a tiny cluster, and before I knew it, they were having a garden party under my entire maple tree! They spread through these underground stems called rhizomes and stolons (fancy garden talk for plant runners).

I learned the hard way that they can be a bit too friendly with their neighbors. Last year, they nearly smothered my precious hostas and ferns!

Growth Control Methods

Containment Options

After my “great garden takeover” of 2022, I figured out some clever ways to keep these enthusiastic plants in check. Want to know my secret?

I use cut-up plastic buckets pushed deep into the soil as barriers. Super budget-friendly and works like a charm!

You’ll want to push these barriers at least 6 inches deep – these little escape artists are sneaky!

Reproduction Control

Here’s something fascinating I discovered: these plants can produce adorable red berries, but only if you have two different patches growing near each other.

I actually think it’s pretty neat – they’re like plant neighbors that need each other to make berries! Just remember to remove the berries if you want to keep spreading under control.

Plant Structure

Growth Pattern

Every spring, I get so excited watching these little darlings emerge! They start with just two leaves flat on the ground.

Before you know it, they’re standing tall and proud, reaching anywhere from 6 to 12 inches high. The way the leaves wrap around to protect the flower stalk reminds me of a mother hugging her child!

Flower Characteristics

Oh. My. Goodness. Let’s talk about these heavenly blooms! Each stem produces up to 15 tiny, bell-shaped white flowers that smell absolutely divine.

I love bringing tiny bouquets inside – they make my whole kitchen smell like sweet jasmine! While I’ve heard there are pink varieties available, I’m perfectly happy with my classic white ones.

These sweet little flowers have what botanists call “tepals” instead of regular petals. Isn’t that just the cutest garden term you’ve ever heard?

While these beauties need a bit of management, they’re totally worth it! They’ve become one of my favorite spring traditions, and I bet they’ll become yours too!
