How to Plant and Grow Beautiful Tree Peonies

Written by Emily Belkoff

Ever wonder how to grow those huge, gorgeous flowers you see in fancy gardens?

They’re called tree peonies, and I’m about to show you exactly how to grow them in your own yard!

These flowers are total show-stoppers, and with my simple guide, you’ll be growing them like a pro in no time.

Essential Planting Requirements

Site Selection

Finding the perfect spot for your peonies is like picking the best seat in your favorite coffee shop – it makes all the difference!

Your peony babies need a nice sunny spot to thrive – think full sunshine and happy thoughts.

The soil needs to be rich and drain well (nobody likes wet feet, including peonies!).

If you’re wondering about zones, these beauties do best in zones 3 through 8, and they actually need about 60 chilly winter days to give you those amazing blooms.

Timing & Basic Requirements

I learned this the hard way – timing really is everything with peonies!

Fall or super early spring is your perfect planting window for bare root peonies.

Here’s my number one tip: those little growth points (we call them “eyes”) need to be buried just right – about 1.5 to 2 inches deep.

Planting Process

Ground Preparation

Start by digging a hole about one and a half times wider than your peony root.

Mix in some yummy compost – think of it as feeding your plant a healthy breakfast before the big day!

Planting Steps

Getting the planting depth right is like Goldilocks – not too deep, not too shallow, but just right at 1.5-2 inches.

Keep the mulch away from directly touching your peony – they’re a bit particular about that!

Give them a good drink of water after planting – they’ll be thirsty after all that work!

Spacing Guidelines

These beauties need their personal space – plan for them to grow about 3 feet all around.

If you’re creating a dreamy cutting garden like mine, space them 24 inches apart in rows.

Growth Timeline & Care

Early Years

Don’t panic if you only see leaves the first year – your peony is just getting comfortable!

Year two might bring a flower or two, like a shy teenager testing the waters.

By year three, oh my goodness – get ready for the show to really begin!

Cutting & Storage

Harvesting Tips

Here’s my favorite gardening secret: squeeze those flower buds gently – when they feel like soft marshmallows, that’s your signal to cut!

I love wrapping my cut peonies in brown paper and storing them in the fridge – they’ll last for weeks this way!

When you’re ready to use them, just give the stems a fresh cut and pop them in water – they’ll open up beautifully!

Division Process

When & How

Fall is division time – it’s like giving your peonies a fresh start!

Cut back all the foliage, then gently dig up the whole root ball.

Give it a good spray with the hose (this is oddly satisfying!) and look for natural breaking points.

Make sure each division has 3-5 eyes – this is super important for future blooms!

Seasonal Care

Post-Bloom Maintenance

Don’t get scissor-happy after the blooms fade – those leaves are working hard to store energy for next year!

Wait until after the first frost to clean up the dead foliage – usually somewhere between October and December.

Bloom Extension

Want peonies blooming longer? This is my favorite trick: plant different varieties that bloom early, mid, and late season.

It’s like orchestrating your own flower show that lasts for weeks instead of days!
