How to Plant and Grow Magnificent Delphiniums in Your Garden

Written by Emily Belkoff

Oh my goodness, can we talk about delphiniums for a minute?

These stunning towers of blue, purple, and pink blooms have completely transformed my garden from “nice” to “wow!”

After years of trial and error (and yes, some amusing failures), I’ve finally cracked the code to growing these gorgeous flowers.

Starting From Seeds

Let me tell you, starting delphiniums from seeds is like raising tiny garden babies – it needs patience and love, but the results are so worth it!

Initial Setup

You know what’s funny? My first attempt at growing delphiniums was a total disaster because I didn’t know about the magic of proper seed starting. Now I know better!

I get my seeds from Dowdeswell’s in New Zealand (they’re absolutely amazing), and I’ve learned that timing is everything. You’ll want to start these beauties indoors before the last frost melts away.

Let me share my must-have supplies (I keep these in a special corner of my potting shed): a tray with drainage holes (those little cell trays work great too!), seed raising mix (not regular potting soil – trust me on this one), and a container with ventilation holes in the lid. Oh, and grab some newspaper – it’s going to be your secret weapon!

Planting Process

Here’s where the fun begins! Fill your container about halfway to two-thirds full with that special seed raising mix.

Now, here’s a trick I learned the hard way – moisture is crucial, but don’t go overboard! You want the soil moist like a wrung-out sponge, not sopping wet like after a rainstorm.

Sprinkle those precious seeds across the surface, giving them plenty of personal space (they’re kind of like teenagers that way).

Then add the teeniest layer of mix on top – we’re talking super thin here, about 2mm (or 1/8 inch if you’re like me and still use imperial measurements).

Early Care and Growth

Germination Requirements

This is where your inner plant parent really comes out! Keep your baby seeds cozy at around 20 degrees during the day.

I learned this the cute way – think of them like Goldilocks: not too hot, not too cold, just right!

Keep them in a shaded spot (direct sun is a no-no at this stage), and do a moisture check every couple of days. Just lift that newspaper cover and take a peek!

Seedling Care

When those first tiny green sprouts peek through (usually around 10-14 days), it’s like watching your garden babies take their first steps!

I love using a mist sprayer for watering – it’s gentle and makes me feel like I’m at a fancy plant spa.

Once your seedlings get a bit bigger, treat them to some seaweed fertilizer – think of it as their first real meal!

Transplanting Stage

Potting Up Process

Get ready for moving day! When your seedlings start looking strong and sassy, it’s time to graduate them from their starter home.

I love this part because it really feels like progress! I use regular potting mix for this stage, but here’s a pro tip I picked up: mix in some perlite for extra drainage. Those little white bits make such a difference!

Making the big move is like a delicate dance. First, make a cozy hole in the new pot. Then, ever so gently, slide your fingers under the seedling and lift up, keeping that precious root ball intact.

Post-Transplant Care

Time to reward your babies for being such troopers during the move! I always celebrate with a nice drink of liquid seaweed fertilizer – they absolutely love it!

For the next few weeks, keep the nutrients flowing with a weekly dose of general-purpose liquid fertilizer. Think of it as their growing-up vitamins!

You’ll know you’re doing everything right when you start seeing those gorgeous true leaves developing. It’s like watching your plant children grow up right before your eyes!

Final Growing Stage

Garden or Container Options

Now comes the fun part – deciding where your delphiniums will live! I’ve had success both in the garden and in containers, so don’t feel pressured to choose one way or the other.

Sometimes I’ll group a few plants together in a large container for a spectacular show on my patio. Other times, I’ll dot them throughout my garden beds for that cottage garden feel I absolutely adore!

If you’re going the container route (which is perfect for small spaces or beginner gardeners), just make sure your pot is big enough. These beauties need room to stretch their roots!

Success Indicators

Let me tell you, there’s nothing quite like the moment you spot those first true leaves unfurling. It’s like nature’s way of giving you a thumbs up!

Keep an eye out for strong, sturdy stems and deep green foliage – these are tell-tale signs that your delphiniums are thriving and happy.

And then… oh my goodness… when those first flower spikes start reaching for the sky! I still get butterflies in my stomach every single time I see those gorgeous blooms opening up.

Wrapping Up

Those magnificent towers of blue, purple, or pink flowers are absolutely worth every minute of care you put in.

And once you’ve grown your own delphiniums from seed? Well, let’s just say you’ll never look at a garden center the same way again!

So go ahead, give it a try! I’d love to hear how your delphinium adventure turns out.

And remember, every experienced gardener started exactly where you are right now – with a handful of seeds and a heart full of hope!
